Quick Tip: Use Salt To Help Clean Up Egg Spills

101909-eggs1.jpgWe're fans of using salt for more than just seasoning. Just like the ever fabulous white vinegar, salt has many uses. We recently saw a new tip for salt, having to do with cleaning up raw egg.

Cleaning up spilled egg off the floor is always a gooey and slimy experience (unless you have a dog), when you miss your bowl or drop the egg on the way to the counter. Well, cleaning it up is all about salt.

Raw egg whites, as you probably know, don't really want to grip to paper towels, rag or sponges. Even if they do, it will take a few passes at the small spill to get things wiped up and clean again.

According to the book, Urawaza: Secret Everyday Tips and Tricks from Japan, all you need is extra salt for a spill. The salt gives the egg something to stick to and makes it easier to pick up. This trick also works for other things that need a little clean up. Dog vomit, spilled wine (on carpet), or anything that stains or is too slippery to clean up easily.

Check out this video which attempts to demonstrate the theory, but we're guessing this particular spill needed a little more time to sit!

Is this a silly waste of resources and time? Or will you be giving to test it out? Let us know in the comments below!

This REALLY works. I recently dropped an egg on our ceramic tile floor in the kitchen...RIGHT under the door of the refrigerator. I sprinkled some kosher salt on top the egg and it soaked it right up!!!

I wish I knew this 2 days ago when BF spilled 8 eggs all over the floor.

We used a dustpan to clean it up

Will second the "have a dog". While cooking yesterday, an egg rolled off the counter - before I could even notice it, the dog had his lips all over it - and it was gone! :-)

I use a spatula to scoop up as much egg as possible and then use a wet cloth to wash up the rest followed by chlorox. Why waste the salt or risk the surface of the floor? Soap and water work great.

best reason to keep a box of regular salt around. I cover in salt, let it sit, and then scoop it up with the dustpan.

But I thought I was the only person who did dumb things like drop eggs on the floor.
