Quick Tip: Separate Your Measuring Spoons!

2009-09-04-MeasuringSpoons.jpgRemoving the measuring spoons from their ring feels like a major taboo, doesn't it? No matter how awkward or downright annoying it's been to use one scoop while holding back the others, it never seemed quite right to actually divide them up. Well, friends, it's time we got over that mindset!

This is one of those simple and rather obvious tips that really makes such a difference. Single measuring spoons are a lot easier to maneuver into small jars of ingredients, and we're not constantly trying to keep used measuring spoons from touching the clean ones. We also use the tablespoon and teaspoon measure the most, so there's really no need to mess with the entire set every time we cook.

One of our biggest and somewhat irrational fears about separating the spoons was that we would lose one or not be able to quickly find the we measure need. With a little thought and cupboard organization, keeping track of individual spoons is no more trouble than keeping track of the whole set.

We're keeping our spoons in a spare plastic container in our equipment drawer. When we're doing a big cooking project, we take the container out and set it on the counter where we can easily see and grab the measure we need. And when they're washed and dried, everyone in our house knows that they go right back into the container. So far no troubles!

Do you separate your measuring spoons or do you prefer to keep them on the ring?

I did this a while ago, on accident, but I have never gone back. I don't use a container, I find that they just sort of nestle nicely so they are usually together anyways...

I've tried it and it's a disaster. I was hunting for the right size or the small ones would disappear either in the sink, the dish drainer or on the counter. Much easier to keep together and just grab. BTW, I have a couple of sets and I really love the oval set by Cuisipro (around $14 at Amazon or any good kitchen store). Easy to get into small containers and great curved handles that balance and can rest on the counter.

I just got those magnetic measuring spoons, and never have the ring problem or the can't find the spoon problem anymore! Highly recommended!

I've always separated them; that way if one's in the dishwasher, they aren't all in there.

I've always separated them and thought it was weird and annoying when cooking in other people's kitchens who didn't.

Subvert the dominant paradigm!

I have multiple sets around 4 sets are separated and one is left intact. The intact one gets used when things have pesky measurements like 3/4 tablespoon and things like that.

I'm with kimmyt--possibly my single favorite kitchen item is my magnetic measuring spoon set. LOVE them. Highly recommend. (Although recently, when I thought I'd lost the Tbsp. and wanted to buy a new set, I couldn't find them in any store. Was about to start searching online when it turned up inside my brown sugar package...: )

gross when people don't separate them -- how do they all get/stay clean?

my silverware tray in the drawer has 4 vertical slots and one horizontal along the top -- i just keep them in the horizontal one along with the little paring and condiment knives, have never had a problem finding or losing one.

my family at home had one drawer dedicated basically soley to measuring cups and spoons -- again, they were always there when you needed 'em.

separate. I also have collected a lot of extras - you can pick them up at yard sales and the like. I like having plenty.

Magnetic measuring spoons! They have changed my life for the better. (I bet you could make your own with stick-on magnets that you can get at the craft store).

But they get so sad if you separate them.

Also, I cannot ever find them if they get separated, as my two utensil drawers are organized "catch-all" fashion (which is to say, things have a particular spot in each small drawer, but no dividers or containers are used).

I have 2 sets of measuring spoons, one separated, one not. I can only find, and therefore use, the unseparated ones. They're a set of spice-jar-width spoons from Williams-Sonoma (which they don't appear to sell anymore!), and I've never had problems keeping them clean.

I just can't imagine this working for me as I think the smaller sizes (1/8 to 1/4 tsp come to mind) would get lost in the abyss that is my kitchen "gadget" drawer. It's not that I have alot of gadgets mind you, its just that the things that tend to go in there are jumbled up as is.

I keep mine in one of the silverware tray compartments. I have enough compartments to use one for these and just a couple of other items.

I've had mine separated for a long time. We have two sets, actually, with both the "standard" and the "odd" sizes (one set is round and one is those squared-off ones). We just keep them in a pretty mug on top of our microwave.

You can find rings in any office supply store that easily open and close so you can store them together but take them apart for use.

Mine are too good of friends to be separated. As for cleaning them wow I've never found it to be a big ole chore. You just take your sponge and wipe each spoon - tada!

Why bother separating them? Maybe mine are different, but it's never been hard to 'maneuver' them to get into a spice jar. Granted, I do have a separate set for wet and for dry, as one holds liquid better, and one fits into spice jars better.

Noooooo! I would much rather have them all on the little ring together. Especially when baking, I often end up using several (or even all) of the spoons, so it's much easier to just grab them all at once. Plus, they're always in order.

Seperated- but because the ring brok eyears back. Like others, mine are kept in the compartments of my silverware drawer along with all my small cutlery 'tools', like my kiwi fruit spoon/knife, paring knives. corkscrew. And because mine are plastic they are easy to spot amongst all the metal.

Who would've though such a simple thing would cause such a debate?

I got this sweet silicon number that pops back between 1 and 1/2 tsp and tbs! Its great, one tool with a magnet glued to my fridge and I'm set!

I don't even use them I have to admit-I have a tsp, tbsp and desertspoon that I use for other things that i use along with some common sense. I know lots of people get nervous about following recipes though so I'm all for them if they boosting people's cooking confidence.
