Quick Tip: How to Keep Your Cutting Board from Slipping

2008_10_20-NonSlipMat.jpgTrying to use a cutting board that slips against the counter with every motion of your knife is not only annoying, it's dangerous! Don't worry - this is one kitchen grievance that's easy to solve.

The easiest and cheapest way to keep your cutting board from slipping is to put a damp paper towel or damp kitchen cloth under your cutting board. This creates friction between your board and the counter to keep things from slipping.

If you want something more reusable (or get tired of wet towels!), try a non-slip mat like what we have in the picture above. You can make one yourself from the same material used to line your drawers or keep your rugs from slipping. Rolls of this non-slip material are available at places like Home Depot and Target for around $5.

One more step up is finding a cutting board that has non-stick "feet" on the bottom surface. We've seen these ranging in price from $5.99 to $36.99. You could also make one for yourself by putting a ball of tacky-putty (the same putty you used to hang posters in your college dorm room!) underneath the corners of your cutting board.

Here are a few sources from Amazon:

Roll of Non-Slip Mat, $3.99
ArchiTEC Gripper 5x7 Non-Slip Cutting Board, $5.99
Epicurian Cutting Surfaces Non-slip Cutting Board, $36.99
Removable Putty Poster Tack, $2.43

I have one that's big enough to span the sink so it just jams into the stainless steel rim and doesn't move.

I have very little counterspace so I usually put my plastic cutting board on the ratty pull-out board built into the cabinets. Of course, then I can't open the fridge the whole way...

This is another thing my silicone baking mat comes in handy for!

I use a small bamboo gripper board. LOVE IT. I don't think I want to use anything without a gripping surface ever again.

I took a knife skills class at the Brooklyn Kitchen a while back and there we used Epicurean cutting boards, which are also fantastic.

We held those in place by wetting a paper towel lightly and laying it flat on our surfaces, then placing the cutting board on top. There was no movement at all.

BTW, thanks to thekitchn, which is how I found out about Brooklyn Kitchen's knife skills class in the first place.
