Good Idea: Make a "Stuff I Like to Eat" List

2009-06-18-StufftoEat.jpgYou know those times when you feel totally uninspired to make dinner, but also don't want to succumb to the lure of the take-out menu? Molly from Orangette has a suggestion: make a list.

Molly actually recommends calling this list "Crap I Like to Eat," noting that the slight swearing is helpful when you're especially stuck. Under this heading, you write a list of dishes that you've made before and that you'd like to make (and eat!) again. These are meals that are appealing to you and that you're always in the mood for no matter when, without a doubt, and hands down.

The next time you're feeling at a loss for something good to eat, take a look at this list for some inspiration. If the list is no longer inspiring to you, that means its time to make a new one.

Pretty nifty idea, huh? We wind up staring into the fridge with rumbly stomachs frequently enough to think this is definitely worth a try!

What foods would go on your list right now?

Off topic, but I really like that ring and would love to know what type of material it's made from, if that information is known...

Oh, I've been doing exactly this recently! I don't like to strictly plan a week's menus or meals to cook, but I do keep a list of things I'd like to make, or could make based on the current ingredients in the house, etc., and then I consult it if I'm feeling indecisive or uninspired. Very helpful.

I do a similiar thing and recommend this to my patients too.

I go through my cookbooks and write down the recipes and page number that look good, and keep it in the front of the book for quick reference.

Also, after I go grocery/farmer's market shopping, I write my "inventory" on a post it note and stick on the fridge along with things to make.

It really works!

insalata caprese
zucchini "pasta" with garlic, olive oil and parmesan
roasted red peppers with salt and olive oil, or with harissa if I have it in the house
pasta with mushrooms, garlic, and lemon juice
greek yogurt or skyr with fresh blueberries
salad with dried cranberries, goat cheese, and pecans
any fresh fruit, particularly peaches and figs with fresh ricotta

It is so helpful to make this list-- it reminds me that there are many healthy things that I like. I should refer to this when I'm tempted to have junk.

That is definitely helpful, great idea. My list would be something like: pasta with marinara sauce, Trader Joe's soy nuggets, tossed salad with balsamic vinegar and olive oil, grilled chicken and fresh fruit. I've also started meal planning and it's been really helpful!

I also like to have a "stuff to eat when ill" list. It's especially helpful when one is nauseated (especially if, like me, you get nauseous when you're too hungry). Beyond the traditional saltines and 7-up, I have Wheat Thins and a hot cereal recipe of my mother's.

This is a great idea to do with children too.
I remember seeing a list on the fridge at my bf aunts house once and I asked her what it was. They called it "Dinner Ideas" but same thing. They let each kid pick a meal one night a week, so the list came in handy for that.

At first attempt, this is difficult for me as what I like to eat almost always depends on my mood, what I've eaten already that day, activity level (or lack thereof), etc. But, the one thing that came to mind and something that I am always hungry for is a peanut butter and honey sandiwch on toast.

lol. I made a list of things I like to eat and being a designer, I laid all the words out in different typefaces and then pieced them all together to make a word collage. It's framed and sits in my kitchen as a piece of art :)

Here's a link to the words:

@buda -- that's wonderful! I love it!

I used to be a graphic designer too. (Now I'm a nutritionist) Yay foodie art!

As the house cook, I keep a seasonal list of what my husband and child like to eat. Cuts down on frustration, especially when I see the same items on both lists.

For us this would only work if it were things that could be assembled in under five minutes.

For me it would be a grilled cheese.
For my husband it would be bread and Nutella (which is a meal, you see, because it has NUTS in it).

What do you know. This exercise alone informs me that we should try keeping bread in the house. Great post!
