Thursday Giveaway: Two Pounds of Ugly Mug Coffee Beans

2008_01_31-Giveaway.jpg

Gift: Two pounds of Fair Trade, freshly roasted Ugly Mug coffee beans
Shop: Saving Grace and Hardy Passion available from Ugly Mug's website for $9.25/pound

There are many coffee roasters out there these days, a testament to the growing popularity of really good coffee. One that stands out is Ugly Mug Coffee, a small roaster in Memphis, Tennessee. We are excited to give away two pounds of their coffee to TWO lucky readers today!

Click for more about Ugly Mug and their products (you must see their Elvis blend) and instructions for entering the giveaway...

As Ugly Mug says on their website, fair trade has become as trendy as a caramel macchiato - everyone's holding onto that label these days. But what does it really mean, and how can a coffee roaster genuinely create change in their economic space? Ugly Mug is going beyond simply offering a higher price for the coffee they buy from growers, and investing money straight back into economic assistance and development programs for the farms they work with. Their goal is to be able to trace coffee from an individual farm all the way through to the final cup of coffee - a great service and bonus for their customers.

So while all their coffee is fair trade, contributing higher than market prices into the pockets of the small family farmers who grow the second-highest traded commodity in the world, Ugly Mug is also going above and beyond to change the economic conditions that keep most of these small farmers in poverty. For more on their fair trade mission, read their About Us page.

OK - enough about the fair trade - what about the coffee? We are so smitten by Ugly Mug's various blends and, semi-secretly, their packaging, that we don't know where to start. They offer a wide range of blends, including the blends we're giving away today. Saving Grace is a Central American blend, with high tones and not too dark and not too light. We also asked for a dark blend, Hardy Passion, which is a robust, rich blend from Mexico and Peru. All dark and no bite, as they say!

And you must check out their Elvis blends - they're a Memphis roaster, after all. The house Elvis blend is, of course, so smooth, for one of the smoothest men of all time.

To enter! Tell us your favorite roast of coffee in the comments below: Dark, light, medium - other?

Type a comment in the comment section below by 8:59pm PT/11:59 EST Sunday, February 3, 2008. The winner(s) will be selected at random and will be asked to submit a review of the coffee. Good luck!

Depends on the coffee origin, of course! There is a special roast for dry processed Ethiopian coffees that I am particular to. I would call it "Ethiopian" roast, and it is a very light, almost green roast to accentuate the qualities of the origin. This is often the best roast to bring out the legendary blueberry in dry processed Ethiopian Harrar longberry.

I would not recommend this roast for island origins like Sumatra... blech!

Personally I like my coffee full bodied and blonde (like myself)! That being said, I prefer a medium (or strong light) roast. I have not been the biggest fan of dark roast but there are of course some exceptions to that and those exceptions are spectacular! I would be ever so curious to sample the dark roast pictured above and see if it makes it onto my spectacular short list of darks. :-)
