Thursday Giveaway: Instant-Read Meat Thermometer from The Beef Checkoff

2008_07_16-Thermometer.jpgGiveaway: 5 instant-read meat thermometers from The Beef Checkoff

Where would grilling be without an instant-read thermometer? Admit it - most of us aren't used to cooking meat over an open fire or hot coals, and our sense of timing is a little thrown off. It's always helpful to have a meat thermometer, whether you're cooking inside or out, but we find absolutely necessary when grilling.

Today the Beef Board and their $1 Beef Checkoff are giving us five meat thermometers for five readers and their grilling efforts. Read on to see how you can win one!

The Beef Checkoff is an information drive to help consumers cook their beef to a safe and healthy temperature. You can check their site for info on cooking beef, including cooking videos and thermometer tips.

This thermometer is a specially branded Beef Checkoff meat thermometer, so we don't have any retail options for you to buy it. But we do have some good suggestions for similar thermometers:

OXO Good Grips Analog Instant Read Meat Thermometer - Our contacts at the Beef Board say that in their opinion, this is the best analog choice because it has a large, easily readable display.

Polder Kitchen Thermometer

Taylor Connoisseur Series Digital Instant Read Meat Thermometer

Do you have a favorite instant read thermometer? Also check out our post on how to sanitize an instant-read thermometer.

TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY: What would you like to grill with this new thermometer? Type a comment in the comment section below by 8:59pm PT/11:59 EST Sunday, July 20, 2008. The five winners will be selected at random. Good luck!

I would like to grill a pork tenderloin. They are great for the summer but I am always a little weary of pork on a grill because I never know if it's at the correct temp.

Well, my husband is the griller in this family (I prep the food), and he has a tendency to either undercook or overcook my steak ... SO, I would like him to make me a true MEDIUM-RARE steak. Yum.

This would be great to grill any meat. My husband always thinks he is "helping" me when he insists on grilling our meat. However, I get called outside many times to answer the age old question "Is it ready yet?" Sometimes he even removes everything from the grill, brings it inside and asks if it is done.
He can't seem to grasp the touch test for doneness, so this thermometer would solve the problem. When he grills, I would actually get a night off where I don't do the cooking.

I have some nice buffalo steaks fresh from a local farm that I am sure would not mind a poke or two with a meat thermometer. Top it off with some foil-wrapped onions and portobellos. Hmmmm. Second thought, I am not sure I can wait on a thermometer... ;)

My new favorite thing to grill is apple chicken sausages with mushrooms and onions lightly coated in olive oil. Delish!

I would like to grill to perfection a nice and juicy, medium rare, 2" thick Porterhouse Steak marinated in freshly chopped garlic and low-sodium teriyaki sauce. This instant meat thermometer will do the trick!

Chicken...I'm always worried that I got the chicken cooked all the way through.

Chicken is always my biggest concern on the grill. I never know if it is cooked all the way through and worry about making my family sick. I would love to have one of these instant-read thermometers to make sure that my chicken has cooked to a safe temperature. Thank you for the great contest.

I'd like to try a pork tenderloin. I've always heard it was excellent grilled. This would help me be able to do a good job.

I hate to spend my hard earned money on good meat and then have it overcooked. You might as well pitch it out because it will be as tender and tasty as an old boot. I need the thermometer for grilling rib eyes or tenderloins. Thanks for the chance to win!

I would use this for thick pieces of steak on the grill. Also, later in the year for turkey and pot roast.

Definitely chicken, and any thick cuts of meat like roasts and steaks.
