Gift: Five copies of The Veggie Gardener's Answer Book by Barbara W. Ellis
Shop: Available from Amazon for $10.17
I keep one book in my gardening tote, Barbara Damrosch's The Garden Primer, and have done so for many years (this bible of gardening wisdom came out 20 years ago). But now there's a new kid on the block, and I might have to make room for it.
The Veggie Gardener's Answer Book (Storey, 2008) by Barbara W. Ellis, is a compact volume of answers to commonly asked questions about vegetable gardening, even questions that fairly seasoned gardeners like myself secretly harbor.
Part One covers the basics of how to plan and plant a vegetable garden including information on soil, composting, pests and diseases. Part Two is a crop by crop rundown of how to plant, care for, and harvest a few dozen crops from Artichokes (see page 171 for the answer to how artichokes are grown differently in climates like Southern Pennsylvania versus Northern California) to Tomatoes (want to make your own tomato cages? See page 398.)
Today we're giving away five copies of The Veggie Gardener's Answer Book. To be eligible, tell us your burning gardening question. The winners will be selected randomly .... We'll even take a few of your questions to use as Good Questions this month on the site.
TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY: Tell us your most urgent gardening question in a comment below.
Type a comment in the comment section below by 8:59pm PT/11:59 EST Sunday, May 11, 2008. The winners will be selected at random. Good luck!

I have a few questions...we've planted our first in-the-ground garden (now that we have bought our first home) Tomatoes are coming along well, but...
1. When should I plant arugula (Central CA). It was a good crop but already went to seed. We planted in Feb.
2. Although most herbs say "full-sun" I'm starting to think they don't mean full Central CA (i.e. hot) sun. What temp. do herbs do best at? Should they be in partial shade?
3. What is eating my melons? They look so sad.
4. I've planted several varieties of onions (spanish yellow, red, green) and they are growing, but the stems are relatively limp, not like the robust stems at the farmers market or even grocery store. How long should I leave onions in the ground and how should they be watered so they don't mold?
Thanks for any help.

We live in a townhouse, so I'm forced to container garden. Plus, we're hoping to sell our house and move this summer, so this way the garden can come with us. But, everything I've put outside so far has been eaten by animals or damaged by the lawnmowers (I think - this was last fall when it happened to some leafy plants that were on a our concrete slab of a patio far enough away to avoid damage, but they still got pretty beat up by something). Also, I have a very brown thumb when it comes to container gardening.
So, what herbs and veggies and flowers (I like all three) can I plant that are hardy, and what can I do to prevent the neighborhood rabbits (and whatever else it is that is eating my plants) from destroying my garden?
