Taking Photos of Food

12.21.food_photos.jpg

When we have holiday celebrations at home, we always take tons of photos. What's funny is, it always turns out that our entire family takes more photos of the food than of each other. We've seen friends and other families do this, too...

So, what about you? Aren't you always just shocked at how many "food photos" you take when holiday entertaining? Or are we the only ones? If not, why do we always do that?

And if you feel like getting artsy, check out our tips on taking better photos of food.

Thanks for the tips as I have now become a bit obsessed with shooting food. I'm ok with it though because it is a catalog or portfolio of ideas at the same time.

Love my Canon D40X and thanks to AT for leading me to Flickr!

My wife and I have been talking about getting a whole set of white dishes for the purpose of the food shots turning out better.

Check out Ulterior Epicure on Flickr for some fantastic food shots.

My husband and I are big foodies so when we travel we always take photos of our food! Food is definitely a big part of the culture of the place.

I actually stopped blogging about food when my camera broke toward the end of last summer. I started up again when I finally replaced it this past fall.

It's a little disturbing. I host some sort of lunch, dinner, or dessert party at least once a month, and I rarely photograph my guests ... luckily, at least a couple of my guests bring their own cameras and think to photograph people. Also luckily, my friends and family expect it; they're mostly who I keep my food blog for.

I tend to get caught up in the moment, so most of my especially intricate cakes, etc. for special occasions have gone totally undocumented. i didn't even shoot the wedding cakes I made. And I do have a cooking blog.

But I do like shooting at home. I do most of my cooking for lunch, so I'm lucky to have good daylight most of the time. The flash ruins food.

I will sometimes find time to take photos of my own food, especially if it's something rare that I cooked. I have a friend who always takes photographs in restaurants, too, but I cannot bring myself to do that. (On the other hand, maybe it's a good idea: they'll think I'm a reviewer!)

My husband and I have far more pictures of food on our hard drive than we have of each other or anyone else. We don't have pets or kids, so that's what we take pictures of! And yes, it's disturbing.

My dad almost always takes a pic of the table, sometimes with us in it, of the food. I think of it as an appreciation for all the time it took to put the meal together and my mom's attempts to make food look artistic. Like she'll slice an acorn squash and fill it with spinach and feta cheese, so it's colorful for the vegetarian kid, me, at Thanksgiving.
