2008_04_09-PearlRiver1.jpgDon't these plates look like the AT squiggle? We think so.

There is plenty to buy at Pearl River besides plain, white plates and bowls. But those are always what we end up taking home. Click below for more photos of basic, beautiful dishes.

2008_04_09-PearlRiver2.jpgThe main floor of Pearl River is filled with inexpensive ceramics. Occasionally we'll pick up a mug or vase that has a higher price tag — maybe around $18 or so — but for the most part, simple dishes run cheap. Plates for around $3 or $4, small bowls for $2.50...

We use crisp white dishes to photograph our food, and we've also collected jewelry in pretty, shallow bowls from Pearl River. The large, classic white serving dishes are great for toting out a big plate of pasta or a display of appetizers.

2008_04_09-PearlRiver3.jpgDownstairs, Pearl River sells woks, bamboo steamers, and all manner of utensils, including a large selection of spiders for fishing things out of big pots.

We took a quick trip to the new(ish) home section on the second floor and noticed some nice lacquered and laminate serving trays. And on the main floor, we picked up some soba and black sesame seeds in the food department. We plan to cook soba with tofu, scallions, and sesame seeds tonight — and serve it in one of our new, white bowls.

If you shop online, look in the "Restaurant Supplies" section of Ceramics to find most of the white dishes.

Pearl River Store Hours: 10 a.m. to 7:20 p.m., 7 days a week.

I love white plates because they pair with any other color depending on the season. Pretty napkins or tableclothes usually go with white. While I'd love to have collections of beautiful plates of all shapes and colors, my husband prefers I keep it to one.
