2008_07_23-terrafirma1.jpgWe had absolutely no reason to buy this serving platter for ourselves over the weekend, but we couldn't resist. That delicate, lace-like pattern that looks so modern on a rustic piece of pottery was too much. At the time, we didn't know it was made by a local New York City artist...

Terrafirma Ceramics is owned by artist Ellen Evans, who makes her pottery in Astoria. Her latest collection is inspired by textiles and looks as if she laid lace on top of the plates and glazed over it. There are honeycomb designs and patterns that almost mimic snakeskin. We had a hard time choosing just one piece (our "charger," which we're using as a serving platter, cost $80).

2008_07_23-terrafirma2.jpgThe collection is pretty extensive — bowls, plates, chargers, trays, soup tureens — and comes in black, grey, green, blue, and chocolate brown. This stuff isn't easy to find, though. As far as we can tell, her studio is not a store, and we didn't have a ton of luck finding anything online. If you happen to be in Cross River, New York, check out the home store Yellow Monkey, where we bought our platter (Terrafirma isn't on their website, but you can call and order from them):

We also found Terrafirma at a website called Contemporary Concepts:

And we saw a few pieces in Evans' old collection, Fruit of the Vine, at Amazon (maybe they'll eventually carry the new stuff?):
