July is all about Escapes — getting on the road, seeing new things, and finding escape and retreat in the comfort of your own home. Here at The Kitchn we'll be talking about new and unfamiliar foods, as well as food from other cultures around the world, and eating while traveling. So it seemed appropriate to kick off the month with our new favorite travel mug!
I actually don't use a travel mug very often, since I work at home. But my husband uses one frequently, and sometimes when I travel on the weekends or on long trips I really want a good travel mug.
But I have been quite dissatisfied with most of the generic plastic travel cups that have made their way through my kitchen over the years. I have grown to hate the little flaps that get pushed aside so you can drink; they never seem to stay in place and they fall down on your nose while you're trying to sip your coffee. Then there are those tiny slots you're supposed to slurp a hot drink through; hello burned tongue! And I never liked plastic very much anyway.
And then I saw this slim, sleek stainless steel mug in Market Spice, a wonderful tea and spice shop in Seattle's Pike Place Market. I like how the entire lid comes off so you can sip normally, and how the lid then totally locks into place with a seal so you don't drip coffee dregs later while toting the mug around. It also has a handy carabiner handle that can fold flat or clip onto a bag. I really like the slim profile, too; it fits into every car cupholder. I used this constantly during this past trip; it was great for hot and cold drinks alike.
If you're not near Seattle, you can also pick up these mugs via Greenfeet.

Love that handle - such a smart idea! And yeah, why is it that travel mugs never seal properly? Mine even sloshes around while I'm holding it upright, let alone being able to carry it in my purse!

... I have a different one that seals... it's a Contigo. My sister-in-law gave me one for Christmas and it's seen daily use since then. NO LEAKS! ... and yes... I put it in my purse.

I've seen them on Amazon too.

My favorite travel coffee mug is the Trudeau Drive Time

It never leaks. I've had a Drive Time for years, i'm on my second model... i'd never use another. It's the only travel mug i've ever used that doesn't leak. ever. when full and tipped upside down... no leaks. amazing. ;)

I have a Nissan thermos bottle that is airtight, leak-proof (as long as you remember to cap it tightly) and keeps liquids hot for almost an entire workday. It's also quite attractive: slim and sleek.

I have a mug just like that. I got it at Gorilla Coffee in Park Slope. My main complaint is that it only holds 10-11oz of liquid. Also, if you overfill it, it will have a slow drippy leak for a while. And it seems like it would be easy to tip over and spill while open... though I've somehow never done so.
But I'm pretty sure mine hasn't dented at all (and I've had it since late December) and I'm a major klutz who drops things all the time.

I LOVE my Contigo travel mug, although the pull tab just broke off after several years of daily use. It never leaks and keeps things hot for hours. (When I occasionally fill it up and forget it in my morning haze, my tea is still comfortingly warm after a full work day).

Erm, since I don't drink coffee I'm pretty good with my Ohio State Stainless Steel travel mug for my carnation instant breakfasts.
But I wanted to say thanks for this post because my bro-in-law has a serious addiction to coffee mugs, and beer coozies for that matter, but being a frequent Colorado camper/hiker I think this is a great gift for him!
