How Do You Feel About Seasonal Dishware?

2008_10_13-SeasonalDishware2.jpgImpractical? Perhaps. Gaudy? Mmm...a bit. But once a year we pull these Halloween plates out of storage and use them with a smile all month long - and often quite a bit longer! A look at the other plate designs in the set after the jump.

2008_10_13-SeasonalDishware.jpgWe're not sure what it is that we love so much about these plates. Aside from a few Christmas mugs, these are the only seasonally-themed dishes we own, and the rest of the year we pretty much stick to classic white dishware.

Maybe it's that we associate them with the coming of fall and the beginning of the holiday season. Or maybe it's that they are so silly and whimsical. Using them makes us relax, enjoy the autumn sunlight coming through the window, and pour a second cup of coffee.

Do you keep any seasonal or holiday-themed dishes?

what a waste

Yes they are cute and all, but they take up space and happen to be very impractical. I will make a seasonal wreath and xmas come, the tree of course, and the table runner, but dishware... no.

Never have, never would. Waste of money, waste of materials.

Lady J, don't know what you mean by "what a waste." If someone enjoys them and uses them year after year there's nothing wasteful about that. I think they're cute, and an especially fun tradition if you have children.

I think I figured out why I don't like Halloween very much. I hate the colors! I love orange, but not candy-corn orange, and paired with black and yellow, yech! Even Christmas is tough with forest green and fire engine red. Just bad color combos, IMO!

We keep kosher, so we buy "seasonal plates" to use for Passover. They are pretty, cheap, and we can get new ones every so often, and reuse the old ones as the pet dishes/storage and such.

I don't have any yet, but after seeing yours I'm tempted. Maybe when I get a house, right now I just change out the salt and pepper shakers and the fruit bowl/plate a friend of mine hooked me on Fitz and Floyd.

I love those dishes! I found the one with the dog at a goodwill in portland, and had no idea it was a set! I'm now on the lookout for the rest...

I always swore that I wouldn't for all of the above listed space and money waster reasons, but a couple of christmases ago I picked up the white and gold tord boontje dishes at the 75% off target christmas sale.

I liked them and they make me happy. besides when I was little it always made me really excited when my mom would put out the christmas dishes--it meant that christmas was really coming. someday I hope my kids feel the same way.

I second the point Icg makes about making the season exciting for kids. (whatever the age) Special things that are associated with happy times and good memories are always worthwhile.

I don't have any seasonal china, yet. However my mother has a cabinet full of Nikko's Christmastime, and it's not Christmas unless she hauls it out for the various holiday functions. It's something to see.

No thanks. I'm just not that holiday-y.

My father-in-law gave us a set of 4 place settings of Nikko christmas tree plates. I don't like them at all. If I was into seasonal place settings, it would not be these. And 4 place settings are completely impractical to me because if we are going to entertain we would have at least 8 or 10 family members over. We have a baby due in about a month, and I think we might make it a December tradition to use the plates everyday and I won't worry if the baby (or someone else) breaks them...

I do love the Halloween ones you have, and often come thisclose to picking up fall or Thanksgiving plates. I love the colors and patterns, but can't justify them.

My mother has been collecting the Spode Christmas china for as long as I can remember. It is the one thing that neither my sister nor I want from my Mom. It is such a big thing to store in additional to the formal china. I like having a few holiday bowls or some small candy dishes but nothing formal like dinner sets.

I could see having some pretty Christmas serving ware, something tasteful (if I had the room). But that's about it. No cartoons or drawings of pumpkins for me.

I think they're cute. Use what you love and screw everyone else! I have a few Christmas mugs and some seasonal s&p shakers, that's about it.
