Putting a coaster under every cup, mug, or soda can was the law of the land in our house while we were growing up. While we're not nearly so fanatical now that we're on our own, we do keep coasters on hand. Particularly if they're as cute as these sets from Etsy...
Here are some lovely coasters we've recently come across on Etsy! Don't they make you want to protect your hardwood surfaces from dripping glasses and hot mugs?
• 1 Yellow Canary Coasters from Jayteedoubleyou, $14.00
• 2 Letterpress Coasters from PaperedTogether, $12.00
• 3 Quilted Patchwork Coasters from Junienone, $14.00
• 4 Marble Font Coasters from Carolina Cottage, $16.00
• 5 Polaroid Coasters from RedArrow, $7.00
Do you use coasters in your house?

I use a coaster at work, but at home...
...well, lets just say I could be a bit less messy overall.
BUT if I were to get my butt in gear and tidy my place up I would definitely use coasters (along with other items) to keep maintenance cleaning to a minimum.

It took ruining a table to become fanatical about it, but now we have coaster sets most everywhere we have seats. Tucked away in drawers and quick to pull out. I even keep one in my nightstand drawer so it's handy when needed.

Now that I own real wood furniture that I care about I regret not having coasters every time I get a glass of water and end up balencing thing precariously on my knees way to often. Etsy is a great idea compared to the ugly cork ones I seem to find in the stores.

My Mom was a fanatic about coasters but I am not, however I always have them on hand when playing poker, so as to soak up any drips of condensation and keep the playing area dry.

I always use coasters. I have several pieces of gorgeous hand-me-down (from family) wood furniture that isn't sealed. No coaster = ruined wood. So I'm as fanatical about it as my mother was.
I have sandstone coasters with cork bottoms (to prevent scratches and sliding around). They're a bit heavier, but they absorb the moisture from the glass but don't stick to the bottom. I hate picking up a glass, only to have the coaster fall off and send drips everywhere when the glass is 1/2 way to my mouth.

I absolutely use coasters, both at home and work. I can't afford to be cavalier about wrecking my furniture, and at work there's nothing worse than putting paper down in that ring of condensation from your diet pepsi can.

As a teenager traveling in Europe I purchased souvenir coasters and have been hooked ever since. They also make a great hostess gift.

I'm definitely a big fan of coasters. Like Zaya, I too marred a nice table top before becoming a convert. Now, I love them. My favorites are the "thirsty stone" ones and the thick cork kind that absorb moisture without letting it leak through. While I like the look of a some of the suggestions above, I'm not sure how effective they'd be.
