2007_05_22_fishsedy.JPGEnd your search for affordable everyday dinnerware at Fishs Eddy. Visit the store in Manhattan's Union Square or stop by their excellent website to send a gift.

Fishs Eddy sells American-made sturdy plates and mugs for every price point: from overstock items made for hotels and diners to special dishes that celebrate the New York City skyline, Brooklyn Bridge and brownstones, or even the Brooklyn accent (Cawffee, anyone?). Cynthia Rowley and Pantone have lines here too, but our top picks is the plain diner whites.

But what about that name?

Nah, this place didn't start off as a fish market, though we overheard some shoppers saying that. Fishs Eddy lifted the name from a small fishing town in the Catskill Mountains upstate.

The shop recently added a collection of American handpressed glass to the store. We heard that the line is doing very well and are interested to see how Fishs Eddy customers are using these intense colorful, retro chic pieces at home.

From Our Archive:
We first reviewed Fishs Eddy in 2004. Since then, they've closed their satellite locations uptown and in Brooklyn, but there's plenty of new finds to be discovered online and in their Union Square flagship. They even sell marbles.

I remember an earlier store in the West Village -- all vintage china. A favorite resource of mine for gifts....

That was my favorite store in the city, both the one near ABC Carpet and the one on the Upper West Side. I used to go in and wish I needed new dishes. I liked the restaurant ones that they had in stacks around the store. They were so tough that when employees needed to reach something high up, they just stood on a stack of plates.

They occasionally set up a stand in front of their store when the street fair runs in front of it and seriously mark-down the merchandise. I got my favorite glasses there years ago for 50 cents a glass. But alas, all have broken but one (not the glasses fault really, unruly former roomates and a clumsy visiting mother led to their demise).

I thought the Fishs Eddy on the UWS was just moving down the street and would be available (to a lesser degree I suppose) inside the Gracious Home near Lincoln Center.

Thanks for the tip KKF. The manager of the store didn't mention the move inside Gracious Home to us. I'll email them and see what we can find out.
