Tailgating: Make Buckeyes Tonight

2008_01_07-Buckeyes.jpg

We must admit that we are clueless when it comes to football. And yet even we cannot avoid the excitement in our native state as Ohio State goes up (again) for the Bowl Championship in college football.

However you feel about college football, you have to admit that any excuse is enough to make these Buckeye candies. The totally perfect Buckeyes pictured above were made by Christophile at Dessert of the Month Club - check out the rest of that great blog, and click through here for more on these quick treats and the recipe too...

Buckeyes are one of the easiest candies to make at home. You just mix creamy peanut butter with powdered sugar and butter, roll the delicious mix into balls, and dip into melted chocolate. Chocolate peanut butter perfection. The best thing is you don't have to wait forever for them to cool; you can start a batch now and they'll be ready in time for the game!

Christophile used the recipe we offer below. As pointed out, you don't need the wax at all. We just use that when these will be sitting out for a while, or when they need to stand up to warmer temperatures.

Ahhh, what a dismal night it was for our beloved Bucks…

At least I have a fridge full of Buckeyes! We're a little late in getting out our annual holiday offering to friends and family but even far, far away from Ohio, these decedent little balls are a huge hit every year. And so easy!

Quick tip - these babies freeze GREAT! I try to keep some stashed away in the freezer (in something sneaky like an old yogurt container) to bring out for a surprise treat for my hubby in the middle of the year. Extra wifey points for me!!

Ok, maybe I'm doing something wrong. I LOVE buckeyes, but every time I make them the dough instantly sticks to my hands and it becomes a massive pain in the neck to roll them into balls. I cut back on the sugar-- does that have something to do with it? Or am I just not able to toughen up and deal like everyone else?

v - have you tried chilling the dough before rolling? I put mine in the freezer for a while, then roll. Might have to do with the oil content of your peanut butter too... ?

My sister in Denver made these in support of OSU, and here in Ohio I made "Go Buckeye Cherry Pie"--at least both our desserts turned out much better than the real Buckeyes! So sad!

Thanks for sharing this "Ohio favorite" recipe with the rest of the world!
