Hot or Not: Flag Cakes

2008_07_03-flagcake.jpgHave you ever made one of these? We certainly have. These sheet cakes iced with white frosting and topped with strawberry (or raspberry) stripes and blueberry stars are all the rage on the 4th of July. But are they sweet? Or too cutesy?
Click below for a new twist on the flag cake from (who else?) Martha Stewart.

Martha has a recipe for a classic flag sheet cake, iced with cream cheese frosting. But there's also a new recipe on her website, for Fruited-Cheesecake Flag. It's individual squares, strategically decorated to make a flag when displayed together.

I think the U.S. flag is too complicated to represent well on a cake so they just look strange, like a child's attempt to draw one. It's not so much the starfield having fewer than 50 stars as the small number of stripes that make it look just "wrong." Ironically, the cake at the top has too many stars (which ought to be the hard part) and not enough stripes (which should be the easy part).

Cake is always delicious! Especially with fruit toppings.

A red-white-and-blue cake, yes. Red velvet cake with white frosting garnished with blueberries would be my vote for the surprise red you wouldn't see until you cut it. (Radical!) But actually attempting to depict a realistic cake is only cute if your child did it.

Realistic FLAG I mean. I hope the cake is not only realistic, but edible.

I made a vegan one of these for Friday, and it was a hit. I don't think anyone cared about how realistic it looked (it only ended up with 11 stripes), but thought it was campy and funny.
