This Weekend in NYC: WINTERMARKET

knap1.jpg

Wild-foraged ginger, home-made ricotta, a 700 lb. pasture-raised steer? If this sounds enticing, then head over to the New Market Building at the South Street Seaport, where the non-profit New Amsterdam Public is hosting WINTERMARKET...

...a one-day event to test New Amsterdam Public's idea for a permanent indoor public food market selling all sustainable and regional (within 500 miles of NYC) ingredients.

All ingredients are available for purchase. In addition, chefs will be cooking up simple seasonal dishes and doling out free samples along with the secrets to their dish's success. Even Mario Batali is making porchetta sandwiches for the occasion!

Event runs 11am-4pm this Sunday, December 16th. ($5 suggested donation)

I am so excited about this event! I hope the predicted storm doesn't keep too many people away.

That pork sandwich was delicious! I can still taste the spice in the mustard, yum! Did anyone get to try the cheddar/pickle sandwich offered by another vendor? The wait was too long and I went for the pork instead by was really curious to know about that one as well.

The highlight of the event for me: getting to enjoy a "flight of honey", a small drop on each fingertip. It made my weekend. And the honey was amazing.

The event was packed when I went around noon so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it becomes a more permanent fixture in my neighborhood!
