the favorite flavor of ice cream is vanilla, so i'm kind of surprised to not see white cake winning here.

and isn't the flavor of red velvet cake based in chocolate?

Red velvet is usually chocolate, though I've seen some recipes using white with a lot of red food coloring. The main difference seems to be that red velvet cake always add buttermilk and vinegar. Red velvet and chocolate cake don't taste the same to me.

I voted chocolate, but I will specify: German's Chocolate, with the ever fab coconut-pecan goo. I have yet to have a commercial one that was really good, so I have to go to the trouble of making it myself, which means I have it very rarely.

Who doesn't love carrot cake? So moist, so different, so very lovely. And you can't beat that cream cheese icing. Yummy!

i love a classic yellow cake with chocolate frosting. alton brown had a good eats episode about this very type of cake, but i haven't tried to make his recipe yet.

red velvet is definitely an interesting hybrid of white and chocolate cake. i tried making one recently and added more cocoa powder to try to bring out the chocolate flavor, but it ended up marble-izing the cake into a red and brown swirl.

if you're going to go the route of reddish cake, i'd opt for strawberry cake instead, which is a close second for me. there's a great recipe on flickr for it that i used last summer.

Goofy cake - a light and moist chocolate cake made without any perishable ingredients like milk or eggs. Also known as missionary cake, since missionaries to undeveloped countries often didn't have access to milk or eggs and had to make do.

my cake preference is mocha--sometimes a full on chocolate cake lacks flavor, and i prefer my frosting to be the source of the chocolaty goodness.
also a big fan of carrot cake.

To satisfy an everyday cake craving, white cake with dark chocolate frosting every time. For guests--spice or chocolate, with a glaze or fruit sauce (chocolate cake with raspberry sauce and whipped cream is always a hit with guests).

Pound cake with fresh barries. After that, it would be a white cake with white chocolate raspberry, (my best seller). I have a great recipe for cream cheese pound cake on my blog.

I have been queen of sour cream pound cake, dense with butter and eggs, for decades, but now my favorite is pear cake filled with fruit and only half a cup of healthy oil,and nuts.
