Survey: What Do You Snack On in the Afternoon?

2008_07_16-vending.jpgIt's 3:00, and we're hungry. We know we should tide ourselves over 'til dinner with a healthy, protein-packed snack. (Carrot sticks and hummus! A handful of almonds and a slice of cheese!) But, we're not going to lie, there might be a Kit Kat in our near future.

I always crave salts and fat, which would put me in the cheese and almonds category, so I chose other!

Dried apricots, figs and raisins, along with a variety of nuts. Currently brazil, almonds, cashews and peanuts.

I admit a weakness for peanut M&Ms, so it they happen to be available (free), I will be dipping into them too.

I always try to bring fruit to snack on, or a home made muffin. If I forget to bring a snack from home....trouble looms. In the form a of a vending machine

I never remember to have snack food on hand at the office but I ususally just suffer until I get home. If I'm really hungry it's almost always because I either ate lunch too early (like 10am, since I eat breakfast at 5:45) or didn't pack nearly enough food for lunch. If that's the case, I go get a sandwich.

I'd probably be a lot better about this if I didn't work in downtown SF, where there are tons of restaurants, cafes and delis within a few blocks.

When I'm working from home, I pretty well - but at my office, there always seems to be another batch of cookies or bag of organic kettle chips that someone brought in to celebrate a birthday, or get through a Thursday. I just don't have the willpower I'd like to around all that tasty goodness.

I usually have a protein bar (I'm a vegetarian) or a handful of almonds. I gotta admit though, if someone brings I'm cookies I'm going to have a couple.

I distinguish between a snack and a treat. A snack is meant to get me through several hours before I can eat a real meal, so I want something like hummus, or nuts, or the like. A treat is candy, cookies, or a cinnamon muffin. That's not to say I don't have a treat sometimes when I really should have a snack. And I always regret it when the happy sugar high wears off and I STILL have hours to go.

I usually crave something salty/crunchy. I try to plan ahead and have healthy things on hand but... I fail.

I am a nurse and I work 7p to 7a, so mid day slump for me is around 3 or 4 am; it is the only time I ever consider eating something unhealthy; but I usually end up having graham crackers and coffee; lately I have developed a horrible habit of having half coffee and half diet coke, or half evil regular coke, Fortunately I rarely have time to hit the vending machine and buy one. I try to bring something healthy, but forget sometimes.

I just had a health scare (blood glucose levels. eep!) and so have been trying to be better. My snack is very often just nuts. But I'll also make a bowl of berries, yogurt, and nuts. I usually use frozen blueberries and raspberries (TJ's wild blueberries are *delicious*!), top with the (low fat) yogurt, then add a handful of pecans and a healthy pinch of coconut. It's wonderfully sweet because of the berries, I'm getting some good-for-me calcium and protein, and the snack is substantial enough that it keeps me going through the mid-afternoon slump time.

I love the Lara bars - just nuts and fruit. They are easy, filling, and not full of crap. I have almonds in my office, but my problem is once I open the bag I can't stop eating them.

I also love to eat cereal and milk as a snack before I go to the gym. In fact I love cereal anytime of the day no matter what!

I like my food to be hot. I'd like to eat healthy but well, that doesn't happen. I normally keep a few packets of instant noodles and instant soup by my desk.

Tea or iced tea

I am home, so the options usually are:

healthy -- trail mix or fruit, yogurt
unhealthy (summer) -- a scoop of ice cream or homemade popsicle, eaten when my 3-year old asks for some!

Usually if I don't have a healthy snack, I just don't eat, and then I'm starving when I get home. The vending machine food would probably be a better idea.
