Survey: Candied or Caramel Apples?

2007_10_19-Apples.jpg

Candied or caramel - either can break a tooth or make you lose a crown, but hey, it's that time of year. We've been looking at all these gorgeous cherry red candied apples, and some blessedly bite-sized versions.

So we ask - candied or caramel? Just pretend you have to pick. And if you really don't feel like risking your teeth at all, try Caramel Apple Cupcakes or Candy Apple Crme Brle instead.

I want a candy apple to look at, but a caramel apple to eat. The candy coating is too sweet and has a horrible texture, IMO. But if you could coat an apple in cheddar cheese and mustard, that would be my top pick!

Actually, after growing up in upstate NY orchard country, I could probably live happily without ever eating (or picking) another apple as long as I live.

Has anyone ever had something called wrapples? My husband was talking about them the other day, I guess you make them in the microwave, but they sound gross. Are they?

Are we talking one-time treat, or make-a-bunch-at-home? Because as someone who has eaten 11 sugary-substance-coated apples in the last 3 weeks, I can say that about 1 caramel apple per year is a pretty good limit. A delicious limit, but still. Candied apples, however, you can easily eat two or three a week. (Also, the caramel ends up everywhere. Mmmm, sticky chin.)

Can I say neither? I find (good) apples tasty enough on their own. Any sugary addition kills their flavor to me.

I vaguely remember trying Wrapples years ago, when they first came out -- it's a caramel "skin" that you put over the apple, right? And then you microwave?

The one part I do recall is that while the taste isn't spit-your-teeth-out-gross, it's not an improvement over microwaving Brach's caramels and dipping apple chunks in the resulting hot caramel, and it's pretty much the same substance and technique anyway. Wrapples are pretty much a convenience product -- it's what you do when you're supervising 60 overwrought Brownies and don't want to spend the next month scraping caramel off your kitchen.

I agree with bubble. I don't think either of the coatings goes with the taste of apple.

I have never had a candy apple, nor have I ever seen one, except in pictures. They look very pretty. Am I just ignorant, or are they a regional thing?

Caramel apples are tasty, but I'm happy with a plain Harrelson apple anyday.

Lake Champlain Chocolates in Burlington, VT has these gorgeous chocolate-coated apples in the windows of their shop. After drooling over them for months, I finally got one... it was so good, but I couldn't finish it! Sugar overload....

I love caramel apples, but I want to see one prepared and then sliced--something about biting chunks off the sticky, gooey mess is not appealing to me.

I love the look of caramel and candy apples. They're absolutely gorgeous. Like several other commenters, though, I'm just not interested in eating them. Apple slices and brie or English cheddar are my thing.

I like them both but since I could only vote for one it was caramel. When I was a kid we lived in front of a caramel apple factor and my mom had keys to it so we could have all we want. They bring back so many good memories!

A good, sour pippin covered in sweet, crackly cinnamon candy. That's the only way to go.

Like the first commenter, I grew up around apples. My family owned a cider mill that was on the same farm my house was on. My first "job" was helping push apples up the conveyer belt to be mashed up. When I was older, my first real job was helping my uncle with the apple press (a huge, but old fashioned and very manual variety). My outlook ended up completely different though. I look forward to fall and apple season like a kid waiting for christmas. When it comes, as it has, I dive in head-first, eating my weight in apples and all the stuff derived from them. My memories of fall at the cider mill are extremely wonderful and every bite of caramel apples (which my aunt would make for the store) or sip of cider brings it all back.

They look great, but I just never got into the TASTE.

Wrapples... good times. My mom bought them a couple of times when I was a kid. I still managed to eat the caramel and the apple separately.

SisterRae... I LOVE chocolate apples. There was a confectioner's shop (I think) in Lake Arrowhead, CA that I used to go to as a kid.

The most delicious chocolate-covered apples ever.

Rolling the caramel apples in chopped nuts is a tasty way to make is a bit less sweet and sticky. Shiny red is prettiest.
