On Birthday Cake for Breakfast

2008_06_30-Cake.jpgWe had several birthdays in the family last weekend, and we're left with quite a lot of birthday cake. Emma's post earlier today on breakfast reminded us of a secret pleasure: birthday cake for breakfast. It seems as much of a tradition as the birthday cake itself. After all, if you're eating breakfast anyway, cake is good for you, right? In the immortal words of Bill Cosby, "Eggs are in chocolate cake! And milk! Oh goody! And wheat! That's nutrition!"

*blush* I'm glad I'm not the only one willing to eat cake for breakfast. Sometimes, it's just what works! ;)

Sometimes I will make a cake just so I can eat it for breakfast!

Although I would never admit that.

Not just cake, any dessert! It's really not much worse than buying a blueberry muffin at the coffee shop.

I love cake for breakfast, and flan, and rice pudding or tapioca. It's weird how many people give me a hard time about that but have no problem with donuts or sugar cereals for breakfast (for themselves or their kids). I bet that the things I eat are *at least* as healthful as some of the cereals out there today.

Yup, pie. It's a family tradition. If there was pie for dessert at supper, it was also usually available for breakfast the next morning.

And it's that old definition of a Yankee:

To a Southerner, a Yankee is anyone from the North.
To a Northerner, a Yankee is anyone from New England.
To a New Englander, a Yankee is anyone from Maine (I think).
To a Mainer, a Yankee is anyone who eats pie for breakfast.

I will eat cake for breakfast, but when I have dessert for breakfast I prefer the classic coffee and a piece of pie.

Strangely, I will eat any official coffee cake, streusel, danish, or cinnamon bun without blinking for breakfast, but the thought of a frosted cake makes me pause for just a second there. Don't worry, I get over it.

Growing up, my mom always gave us sweets for breakfast: leftover birthday cake, pie, rice krispie treats, cookies.. as long as we were eating breakfast :)

Of course, my diet has matured and while I prefer healthy cereals for breakfast, I still wouldn't turn down a plate of leftover birthday for breakfast.

To this day I love stale cake, because my parents used to bring home a piece of cake for me from weddings and parties, and I got to eat it for breakfast the next morning.

i couldn't have cake for breakfast often, but the day after a birthday, it's a nice way to start off your new year.

pie or cobbler, on the other hand, i could probably eat daily. :)

Glad to see that 7 to 1 they're eating cake for breakfast. I thought I was some kind of a freak or something with my sweet tooth. However, [sniff], I'm finding that my tolerance for sugar is decreasing as I age.

Now, pie is another thing altogether. I sometimes bake a pie especially for breakfast.

I have no problem with cake for breakfast, except for some reason I can't bring myself to do chocolate cake for breakfast (and since I usually make chocolate cake I don't eat cake much for breakfast). I find carrot cake with cream cheese frosting to be perfect for breakfast.

Cake, no, but I love having pie for breakfast the day after Thanksgiving. I don't usually like sweet things for breakfast, unless it is a little fruit in plain (Greek) yogurt.

Oh yum... pie or cake with a big cup of coffee. Can't let it go to waste!

I grew up doing this as it always seemed like a huge treat and yet my mom revealed later that she figured it was much better for us to get all that sugar in the morning, rather than just before bedtime. Makes sense afterall! :)
