Ice Cream Flavor Survey

2006_07_18-ice-cream-flavor.jpgEven if you aren't an ice cream eater (who are you?!), this weather warrants a scoop or two. Some of us just love the cold, sweet aspect of ice cream and we're all over the map with flavors. Others have their one flavor they buy or make every time without fail.

According to the International Ice Cream Association, the most popular ice cream flavors in America are Vanilla (29%), Chocolate (8.9%), Butter pecan (5.3%), Strawberry (5.3%), and Neapolitan (4.2%), followed by a smattering of other flavors. We suspect our own survey will turn up different results, and yes, we've eliminated Neapolitan from the list on purpose. If that is your favorite flavor, let us know in the comments.

Yes, Anne! I love Mint Chocolate Chip, too. If the situation's dire, however, I get Ben and Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk.

It all depends on my mood.

The stock guy in the grocery store told me, by the way, that vanilla is likely the most popular flavor because people tend to buy it to go with other things--pie, cake, etc. That makes sense to me.

Right now we have chocolate and blood orange sorbet in the freezer (not together, though I have had a scoop of each together and it is tasty).

My favorite unique ice cream I tried recently was corn gelato from Cones in NYC. It's a sweet cream base with corn pureed in it, really tasty. I wish I could have a cone of that right now with this heat!

I'm fruity type too, but green tea is excellent and so is the whole line of soy milk-based ice 'cream' made & sold at Cremerie Meu-Meu on rue St. Denis in Montreal. I had soy-mango, next I'll have soy-dark chocolate!

Has anyone else ever had teaberry ice cream? The Maple Grove Dairy, now long out of business, made a mean teaberry ice cream. A fruity, light wintergreen flavor.

Aside from Vanilla, Mint Chocolate Chip, or a combo of raspberry sorbet andPaech ice cream, or butter pecan and strawberry combo...

In Rome it's traditionl to mix, but the only thing I like is green apple sorbet.

posted by paul on 2006-07-18 15:43:23

I mix a few drops of vanilla with rosewater ..I love the flavour.

Sometimes I mix in a few cardmom ( spelling not right )

Once i ate icecream (mixed with some kind of wine ) in chelsea. 2 blocks from magnolia bakery. it was in around late march or around april - liked it very much.

funnily enough, i did just buy some neapolitan because yes, sometimes on hot days i have ice cream for dinner, and that was all that was in the store. i think tonight i'll get some uncle louie g's instead, line be damned.

and toscanini's (in cambridge) occasionally has grapefruit sorbet. it's amazing, especially when the weather is hot!

Peppermint!!

Or, sometimes, coconut. Or black cherry, with real black cherries inside. Or gingerbread, from Toscanini's in Cambridge, Mass.

If I had to stick to the ice cream equivalent of primary colors, then plain chocolate.

And any kind of fruit sorbet, esp. ones you don't see every day, like grapefruit, cranberry, etc. Oh, and chocolate sorbet and coconut sorbet.

I love far too many to pick just one. But a few of my favorites:
-All you mint-chocolate chip lovers should check out Emack & Bolio's (in Boston & NY) Peppermint Patty--super minty (not green) ice cream w/chocolate flakes, Oreos, and Junior Mints
-A place I used to go to in St. Paul made "Coffee Break" ice cream--coffee ice cream with Oreos. It was my favorite. Emack makes something similar, but their coffee flavor isn't as strong
-The same place also made a plain, Sweet Cream ice cream that was perfect when I was feeling like a purist
--Cones Dark Chocolate. Velvety goodness.
--I had a ginger ice cream at Gramercy Tavern that was heavenly. Not something I could eat everyday, but memorable
mmm...

2 more things I forgot:
-grapefruit-basil sorbet. So refreshing in the heat of summer.
And for a "Mango Monday":

I tend to like somewhat offbeat flavors and cozy presentations (handmade waffle cones with a marshmallow at the bottom). But straight out of the carton works too.

Current Fave: Haagen-Dazs Almond Hazelnut Swirl. Stone cold addictive!

Gold Standard: Haagen-Dazs Ltd. Edition Vanilla Caramel Brownie is unbelievable! My digestive system can no longer withstand that much sugar in a shot, but man is it good.

I Shall Not Look Upon Its Like Again: Ben & Jerry's Peach-Raspberry Crumble. Summer of '97 the 3rd Ave scoop shop (NYC) carried this flavor. Clearly such ecstasy was not meant for mankind, for I haven't seen it since.

All-Around Winners: H-D Strawberry Cheesecake, B&J Primary Berry Graham (for the graham cracker crust swirl), H-D Strawberry Shortcake, H-D Dulce de Leche/ Pecan Caramel Swirl, and the H-D Brownie Bar (which is like 500 calories each, ridiculous!)

Astonished at the strong showing for mint chocolate chip! I love it, too, but in a well-stocked freezer, it would be a fall-back choice.

First, I remember with great affection the Carvel a short distance from my childhood home. Their 3 machines would always have vanilla and chocolate, of course, and a different one every day in the third. My favorite there was ALWAYS Black Raspberry. A BR cone dipped in chocolate which would harden---a Brown Bonnet!! My favorite. It cost 15 cents! And I will never forget being permitted to go there alone, age 8, with a dime and nickel to get one.

Coffee is also superb, as is nearly anything with cookies in it.

If you haven't visited Ben & Jerry's website, you ought to. It has a graveyard of flavors that have passed on. AND they are having a contest--- invent a new flavor. Fun. Everything about ice cream -- apart from the fat content --- is fun!
