Hot or Not: Pickle Popsicles

2008_05_12-PicklePops.jpgA little while back the New York Times reported on these new Pickle Pops from Texas. Sour pickle juice seems to have hit a sweet spot, because these are getting really popular. We've never tried them, but we always have gazed speculatively at all that pickle juice at the end of a jar, wondering if there was something productive to use it for.

What do you think? Freeze pickle juice for warm-weather licking? Or is that just...gross? Tell us!

i don't know about pickle juice pops per se, but that juice left behind in the jar is an amazing thing (i'm speaking for true "pickles" with pickling seasoning left in the jar, like a few cloves of garlic, some dill, peppercorns, juniper berries perhaps, etc -- these are usually found in imported pickles, not Vlasic). As a poor student travelling through europe once, a friend and i wound up dipping our baguettes in the juice and it was DELICIOUS (hard to believe yes, but delicious). I also use a little pickle juice in some recipes, such as potato salad or home made tartar sauce -- it adds more of that pickle flavor and vinegary tang. Good stuff!

Our soccer coach used to tell us to have a shot of pickle juice to help with the lactic acid.

A few times I've used pickle juice as a marinade for roasts. It adds amazing flavor!

My town had a roller rink (since closed) that made and served these for many years. And yes, kids/people actually REALLY liked them.

I used to have two female co-workers who would drink pickle juice out of the jar. They freaking LOVED it, it was thier mid-day snack.

My mom swears a pickle can cure indigestion, in me they cause it!

Pickle juice is good for relieving hangovers. Pickle popsicles would work well too, I imagine.
