Hot or Not: Nordic Rock Stone Ice Cubes

2008_09_24-nordicrocks.jpgHmm. We like the idea of these reusable stone cubes, made from "Swedish pollution-free rock." You put them in the freezer for an hour and they keep a drink cold without diluting it. On the other hand, they kind of look like dirty blocks of ash. We're torn.

These rocks are made by Mocha in the UK. You get ten cubes that come in a leather pouch- fancy.

I LOVE them!

Are they heavy? Could they take a tooth out during a wayward tip of the glass? I like the concept, but ... I guess I just know too many people who like to chew their ice. Har!

Two problems:

1) they're not that attractive. There are a lot of pretty, (and more obviously non-porous) rocks out there - these aren't they.

2) they wouldn't work very well. Ice works because the transformation from solid to liquid takes a ton of energy - it takes 80 times more heat energy to melt a gram of ice than it does to warm a gram of liquid water 1 degree C. The whole time it's melting it stays at 0 degrees, so your drink stays cold... These offer little more than putting your glass in the freezer does, just without the nice frosty mug effect.

They look like they'd be more fun as building blocks.

I would love to have them for when someone asks for, say, "a Martini on the rocks." But the drawbacks are as stated by Evan M.

I saw something similar to these marketed to scotch drinkers (Who drinks their scotch cold?! Such a shame) and all I could think was "Huh, looks like a recipe for broken teeth to me."

I'd worry that this would scratch up my glasses....

LOVE IT. If nothing else, it makes any drink "on the rocks" that much more poignant.

I actually like the way they look, but wouldn't use them for fear of glass scratches and tooth chips, like earlier posters mentioned. Also, I may be alone in this, but I kind of like my drink to dilute a bit by the end.

They scare me
I'm afraid I'd bite them
Don't put rocks in my food, either

Hm, I dunno. As a rule, I like reusuable ice cubes (I *hate* ice in my drink with a passion), and these seem possibly safer than the plastic ones with possibly toxic (?) liquid inside. But I share the concerns about chipped teeth and scratched glasses.

A set arrived this weekend.

They don't keep anything cold and they leave rock dust in water.

I am sending them back for a refund.
