Hot or Not? Microplane Box Grater

2008_05_12-Microplane.jpgHere is something new and exciting - four Microplanes in one! This box grater has four of Microplane's patented stainless-steel cutting blades in one tool.

We are huge fans of the Microplane graters (silky smooth grating for lemons, cheese, and more) and we're curious what you think about this all-in-one tool. More convenient, or too bulky for apartment-sized drawers? Take our survey then read on for a little more about this grater and purchase information.

It includes extra coarse, medium ribbon and fine graters plus a slicer. The nonslip feet tilt in four directions for ease of use, and the fine grater slides out to let you clean the interior. A plastic cover protects blades and hands for safe storage. Hand-wash.

It lost its appeal at "hand wash" which is also what it says on the Williams Sonoma site. But then I went to Microplane's site directly and there, for the same product, it says :

# Dishwasher safe.

but it also follows with:
# We recommend rinsing your grater in warm water immediately after each use. Remove particles stuck in the blade from the back side whenever possible. To remove "stuck on food" from the front, first soak the tool in warm water and then use a cleaning brush and stroke in the same direction as the teeth.

hot!

not so much because of the four graters in one (or the apt-drawer footprint), but because of the ease of actually using the tool. I'll never get rid of my box grater--no matter how bulky--because it's so much more efficient than the hand-held, wand-y ones.

Thats just it, I have a box grater, I use it mainly for cheese and its much smaller than the one pictured so I don't see the advantage of buying a whole new one when the old one works well. The whole appeal of microplanes for me was for zest and the fact that they excel at that.

when my current box grater meets its maker I'll definitely go for this one - I realize this could be a long time from now.

Is the body of that thing made from plastic? I could see that lasting about six months in my kitchen before it breaks. I'll stick to my all metal grater and use my hand-held microplane when needed.

Has anyone used it? I'm just wondering if it would be more knuckle-friendly than the standard model.

Definitely HOT!

I love, love Microplane's equipment and now that they come in box form, I couldn't be happier! I just could never get the leverage I needed out of those ones that look like a "grater on a stick!" I am going to buy this right away!
