We saw these onion savers in the produce department at our neighborhood grocery last night, and we were intrigued. Apparently the saver is designed so that when your unused half (or 3/4) of an onion is sealed inside, the saver helps keep the onion fresh, moist, and airtight. Have you ever used one of these, and do you think it's useful?
We don't usually have a lot of leftover onions; they go pretty quick in our style of cooking! But when we do we just store them in a small baggie in the fridge and use them up quickly. But if your style is to use a slice here and there for a weekend burger or salad, then this may be helpful, perhaps?
You can see a little more about these onions savers at their Amazon page:

What's wrong with a plastic bag? Another uni-tasker is what I DON'T need.

never used one of these, but i've seen the tomato ones, too. the thought of putting half a tomato in the fridge is kind of gross to me, but... eh.

I could see using it for a tomato - which bruises more easily - much more than an onion!

these are great for reducing onion odor in the fridge and reduces the use of plastic bags or plastic wrap.

I put my cut onions in a tupperware container, so this looks like a definite unitasker to me and the ridges look hard to clean.

A conventional tupperware wouldn't work?

I actually have one and...ehh. I mean, my mom bought it, so it's not like I saw it in the store one day and was like "OMG! ONION KEEPER! THE ANSWER TO ALL MY ONION RELATED PROBLEMS!" It's not something I would have picked up myself, but it does have it's merits. I do tend to refrigerate halves of onions so they won't sting my eyes when I cut them next, and this keeps them from languishing, invisible, at the bottom of the vegetable drawer, while I pull onion after onion out of the pantry. I always check the onion keeper first. But...I dunno. It doesn't seem to keep the onion from drying out any better than a ziplock bag would.

Does tupperware pick up the onion odor? If so, that one probably becomes designated for onions - voila, you've made your own onion keeper.
I like the idea of not using platic baggies.

These do a great job of keeping onion smell out of the rest of the fridge---and they're cute.

I don't see the point in this. Putting them in a flat-bottomed food storage container works much better. If this is meant for an onion that is cut in half, why is it the size of a whole onion? When you place the cut side of an onion down on the flat bottom of another container, the cut is sealed, allowing little oxygen to speed decomposition, plus the closer in size the container is to the cut onion, the less oxygen is allowed around the entire onion. Plastic bags can do a decent job of this too as long as the air is sucked out, but they are wasteful and don't to a great job of blocking odor.

I do have one and think it is great! It fits onions of all sizes, saves waste of plastic bags, secures odors. Oh ya, and it's cute (which was my real reason for the purchase in the first place...)!

I actually have one of these and am debating about whether to keep it. It does keep the onion nice and fresh, but my favorite thing about is is that when I look in my fridge, because of the shape and color, I immediately know that I hae an onion or part of one to use up. If I put it in a tupperware I probably wouldn't know off the bat.
I just answered my own question. I'll keep it.

I like kitchen toys—a lot. But unitaskers aren't my thing. I store unused onion pieces in a Pyrex glass bowl w/top (see: http://www.internationalhousewares.com/zencart/images/products/pyrex_14pc.jpg ) The glass doesn't pick up any odor, I haven't smelled any on the tops yet (the onions wind up going quickly!), and the onion keeps for quite a while. Honestly, I don't know how I lived before these storage bowls. Things (mainly fruits/veggies) last SO much longer in them!

I just reuse jars from salsa or whatever for storing leftover ingredients. They're recyclable and I'm not paying for or consuming some silly plastic onion-shaped doohickey from China.

im a sucker. i'd buy this.
view missmarie's profile
oh really good idea DAMFINO has. use the left over jars for storing half used veggies. saves the use of baggies and jars are cool. i like jars
view missmarie's profile
i just re-use glass jars and don't want another kitchen gadget that i don't really need. but i can see the benefit of knowing right away you need to use up an onion. I forget mine sometimes.

I got one of these because I rarely use all of a red onion at once. I cut off a few slices and then I wrap up the rest and store it in the fridge, where it gets lost and turns into the creature from the pink lagoon. Whether wrapped, bagged, or put into containers (usually way too big for the onions), they got lost.
But this thing works. The ridges are not hard to clean, and they essentially keep the cut side of the onion off the bottom off the container so air continues to circulate. I just found an onion the other day that had been in there for a month or two, and it still smells looks fine. Any other container I would have used and that onion would have been goo. On this long-lost onion, the central core had grown a little, so I probably won't eat it, but at least it wasn't toxic waste. It easily keeps a cut onion fresh for a week or two.
And, as others mentioned, it's immediately obvious what it is in the fridge. I don't use the yellow ones because I don't have leftover yellow onions (I chop smaller onions), but I don't keep lots of sizes of red onions, and I want the bigger ones for sandwich slices and can't necessarily use all of one at one meal.
It's cheap, it cleans easily, it works. What more could you want?

I know this thing seems a little tacky, but its also kind of cute. And Onions really, really last.

I'm a sucker for things that look as cute as this. An onion case that looks like an onion? Sold!
But as others have said, we rarely have onion leftovers. If we do, it's only because the onion was massive. In which case we would have to dice before using this container.
But it would be a good thing because I'm extremely lazy and never wrap onion up before putting it back in the fridge so one of these babies would definitely come in handy for my lazy ass.

It's cute. Where do you get it?

I have one here at home is wonderful because it does not allow the smell of onions contaminate the refrigerator.

I have one for onions and one for lemons and use them all the time. I used to end up with half a lemon in foil rolling around at the back of the fridge and I've had a few mouldy ones because of that.
I love these containers. I save on foil and my fridge doesn't stink.

I have one of these; bought it about a year ago... It really does work well, and I know exactly what it is when I open the fridge... The plastic is somewhat thin, it tumbled out of the fridge a few months ago, and has a good size crack in it. It still works fine, and it is dishwasher safe.
