Hot or Not: Blomus Obar Kitchen Multi Storage

2009_01_27-Holder.jpgDo you use plastic wrap and aluminum foil in your kitchen? We are trying cut down on our use of plastic wrap, but we still keep it around, and we do use foil frequently. (It's recyclable!) So we're curious about this Blomus Obar Kitchen Multi Storage unit. It's a mouthful of a name, and it doesn't describe the product very well. Basically, it's an all-in-one storage unit for paper towels, plastic wrap, and aluminum foil. This could be a big space saver in small kitchens, or maybe it's just overkill. What do you think?

This multi-storage unit can be found around the web in numerous spots. The cheapest we've found it is at Uncommon Goods.

Or you could spend a lot less on a vintage version on eBay. These have been around for years, just not popular for a while.

I'm curious as to how well this actually works. It looks like the various rolls (especially the paper towel) might fall out of their slots and it could be difficult to get enough resistance for cutting sheets of aluminum and plastic wrap easily. But putting my doubt aside, I LOVE the look of this. It would save so much space in my tiny kitchen too!

I have a version of this, and I love love love it. The foil and saran wrap fit into compartments, and a little sliding rotory blade slices pieces off. The paper towel holder fits in "prongs," like common paper towel holders. Best of all, I found it for $10 at Tuesday Morning. ;) I like the all-wood vintage versions, but the models I've seen are quite a bit larger than what I ended up with.

@minji,
Looks like you slide rolls in through the sides and the dispenser slots are too narrow for the roll to pop out of. I agree, though--I'm not sure how easily you can slice a piece of wrap or foil off the roll.

I barely have enough room to drain dishes and do simple prep on the countertop, and NO wall space except over the sink. Who wants these products out hanging in the kitchen anyway? Isn't that what drawers are for?

I really like the way it looks, but my small kitchen has literally no wall space so I don't know where I would put it. I could imagine lots of people having similar issues.

I have something similar mounted on the inside of a cupboard door, so it's handy and hidden. It holds tin foil, cling film, and waxed paper. I'd like it to hold parchment as well, but I don't use it as often so it's fine to keep it in the box.

I like this and would use it if I had the wall space for it. It's a cool idea and looks good too.

I think Ikea has something really similar as part of their Gruntal system. It hangs on the wall and holds multiple rolls of things. I don't know how much it is, but probably less than $65.

expat: but some people have way more wall space than they have drawers. not to mention the convenience.

I have a metal pink vintage one I've used for foil and waxed paper for years now. I don't use the paper towel portion of it because rolls have grown since the fifties. I love mine for foil and waxed paper though.

I have a mid century one I keep on the inside of the door under the sink. moderately well designed, but does the job.

If you don't use plastic wrap, you could always use that slot for waxed paper or parchment paper for baking.
