Cook's Footwear: What Do You Wear While Cooking?

2008_11_24-ChefShoes.jpgFashion and footwear isn't something that comes up very often here at the Kitchn. But with all the winter and holiday cooking in our near future, we thought we'd pay tribute to that which keeps us on our toes! What do you wear for a long day in the kitchen?

Hands down, if I'm going to be in the kitchen for longer than a quick meal fix, I put on my Dansko clogs. Or at least I remember to put them on once my feet start to ache!

They're expensive and I wouldn't buy them just to wear while cooking, but they are definitely my footwear of choice when I have to be on my feet. Not only do my feet stay comfy but I also notice that my back doesn't hurt nearly as much. As an added bonus, the thick soles help put shorties like me at a much better height for working at the counter!

I've also known a lot of people who swear by Crocs (Mario Batali-orange or otherwise) and I've thought about buying a pair myself. People say that they're lightweight and cushiony - a good combination when doing a lot of prep work or standing over a pot on the stove.

What about you? What shoes do you wear while cooking?

Ditto on the Danskos - both for comfort and for height. I get better leverage when I have them on!

Plus they did well for lots of walking while I was in France.

Flip flops or slippers; neither of which are very supportive i'm sure.

I also love my Danskos with a pair of my luscious hand-knit wool socks. There's nothing better!

i usually don't need specialty footwear for cooking because i'm never standing for all that long (i'll perch on a bar stool while stirring, or whatever).

i do find my crocs more comfortable than my danskos for long periods of standing, however.

We're a "no shoe" household, so i'm usually barefoot or just in socks, although i do dream of buying some crocs every time when i plop on the couch, exhausted after a cooking session! :)

I wear socks or go barefoot -- our apartment runs under the rule of "take your shoes off once you get in the door" and that doesn't change in the kitchen.

I suspect I'd start wearing shoes in the kitchen if I dropped anything that caused a serious injury, but outside of an ice cube or a flying bit of onion or chocolate, my feet generally are only bothered by the cat =)

At school or in commercial kitchens, I wear either my Doc Martens or zip-up Dr. Scholl's--both are crazy comfy and, more importantly, grease-resistant. The number one commercial kitchen injuries stem from slips and falls. At home, I'm often in my house shoes or sneakers. I'm too paranoid to go barefoot, especially since I often juggle a lot (sometimes almost literally).

I'm all about the Danskos, both in or out of the kitchen. And I love that photo - if you're on Flickr, please add it to my Dansko group!

I find Crocs in the kitchen to be kind of baffling - those things have zero traction on wet flooring.

birkenstocks. and yes, I have burned my toes on splattering grease. I sometimes end up in my danskos because those were the shoes I wore that day, but I've actually tripped a few times in my kitchen wearing them.

Maybe it's an exclusively Asian thing, but a no-shoes-in-the-house policy dovetails quite nicely into a slippers-you-wear-indoors-only policy. I've got three different pairs for different times of year....japanese-style thongs for summer, rubber-soled slides for spring/fall and sheepskin for winter.

I've got an old pair of leather clogs I got for $20 at payless, like 10 years ago. Now the kids just call them my 'kitchen shoes.' Like you said, easy to slip in and out of, cushy enough that my feet don't kill me after an hour or two of standing, decent traction, that's why they are what they are.

My bunny slippers I got at Target last year. Believe it or not, they have a memory-foam insole and the comfort really makes a difference. I used to be all barefoot all the time.

I've got a pair of crocs that I wear. There have been times when I've been cooking barefoot for a dinner party and then hobbled around once the party actually started because my feet hurt so much after standing on them, unsupported, all day. Crocs may not look all that pretty, but boy do they feel sooooo good. :)

I have a pair of Fit Flops. I know the premise is ridiculous, but they are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. After a day in heels, I am happy to put these shoes on (with concrete floors and 4 pets, I don't go barefoot).

My house shoes. I have summer ones (sandal style) and winter ones (woolen for toasty toes). Or one of my pairs of Birkenstocks if I know I'm going to be standing for hours (I need good arch support or my knees hurt).

But all my house shoes have rubber soles...you only have to slip on carpeted stairs once before all your slippers have rubber for traction.

I'll wear Danskos or flip flops, depending on how warm or cold my toesies are. Most importantly, though, I like standing on the gel-pro mat in my kitchen--it definitely adds to the comfort level, even in Danskos!

Yikes, the thought of being in the kitchen without shoes disturbs me. Broken glass, splattering grease, dropped pans, boiling water--at least when you have shoes on you can deal with these issues if they arise.

That said, I usually wear whatever shoes I've got on, changing into my super-supportive running shoes if I'm going to be standing for a long time. I've been looking around for some special indoor shoes, but I'm one of the few people who finds Danskos uncomfortable.

Yeah I have to wear shoes in the kitchen. I've dropped too many glasses/bottles/can openers/etc. on my toes to do without them. I've got a pair of Crocs that I wear just for this.

Stripey socks are my passion - those are really cute!

In the summer I wear ecco sandals - actually, I wear them all throughout the house, they are the most comfortable shoes ever. Not so cute, but whatevs. In the winter it's closed toe Birks with...stripey socks of course!

I just can't figure the barefoot contingent...you all must be bulletproof. I can't stand barefoot in my kitchen (vinyl floor, not that hard) for more than a quick prep. In the last house with ceramic tile, even that was a killer.

I wear a pair of Merrell slip-ons, my house shoes. I used to wear Doc Martens in culinary school, then Danskos. But I fell twice wearing my Danskos (walking on the street), twisting my ankle (my orthopedist says I have loose joints)... so the Danskos were retired.

We also have a no-shoes policy (light carpets) in our house, so I end up in either socks or slippers in the kitchen most of the time. Socks have been known to be a bit slippery, though.

but if i have a crowd to cook for and long standing times, i grab my husband's crocs.

Birkenstock clogs. I must have something with good arch support when I am on my feet for a while, like when I am cooking. Crocs in the kitchen scare me because of all the holes - I have many grease-splatter burn experiences...

I work in the food industry, and I have to say there's nothing that will ever compare to my 8 year old pair of birks that have gone through numerous resolings. I haven't found anything else that holds up to the grime of kitchens (although my colleagues swear by danskos). I've survived many a falling knife thanks to the their thick leather. I consider the olive oil encrusted patina to be a badge of honor!

Shuna Fish Lydon wrote a great post on kitchen footwear a few years back, from a professional's point of view.

I go with a pair of Danskos that are too beat-up to wear out of the house anymore. It always makes my feet happy to slide into them.

And I firmly believe covering my toes is important. Other than the kitchen I'm a no-shoes-inside girl, but in the kitchen, my feet, they are SAFE.

I wear my slippers all the time in the house. Sheepskin with a thick rubber sole, even in the summer they are just so comfortable. But oh, my word I hate crocks. i was so mortified when our olympic team wore them as their official footwear, My partner and I are constantly teasing his parents about theirs.
