Check Yes or No: Spicy Chocolate

2008_02_13-Survey.jpg

We talked a lot about chocolate a couple weeks ago - we even had an interview with a master chocolate maker and video instructions for grinding your own chocolate! One of our favorite chocolate treats is a Chocolate Chili Bite from Clotilde's weblog. Chocolate has its roots in Central America, where it was often drunk with many hot chilies and other spices like cinnamon.

We're curious - do you like spicy chocolate, like the Vosges Chocolate Flaming Heart above? If so, tell us how hot you like it, and if you like cinnamon, cloves, and other spicy goodness along with your chilies and chocolate.

There are these brilliant truffles at our local chocolate shop (The Chocolate Fetish) called "Ancient Pleasures"--they have cayenne mixed in the ganache center and dusted (along with cocoa powder) on the outside, so you get a hit of heat from the first taste, then it gets drowned in rich chocolate, THEN you get this slow, wonderfully warm after-taste rolling across your tongue from the ganache. Magnificent.

I love spicy chocolate, especially hot chocolate.
The Dagoba Xocolatl (sp??) is fantastic. We like the Vosges red fire bars around here as well.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention my friend's excellent artisan chocolate company, Eclipse Chocolat, which specializes in exotic spice combinations in chocolate.

Being Mexican, I grew up with my fair share of Tijuana supplied Mexican candy. I have always said that Mexicans have ruined perfectly good chocolate with the addition of cinnamon. I have not tasted any kind of gourmet spice infused chocolate, but these years of candy abuse will probably never let me try a fancy spicy chocolate.
