I just toss 'em in a drawer.

I have my knives on two magnetic strips. It's not the prettiest solution, but it is definitely convenient, as well as being sanitary and good for the knives.

We have a flat knife holder in a drawer, but it is meant for the set that it came with and so the two or three others we have are just kind of laying there. We need to get something else to hold them, but it's hard to find anything to fit in that shallow of a drawer.

If this thing didn't come with the knives, I'd be tempted to buy it:

I have a roll-up for my Forschners, and a drawer for all the other, less awesome knives that my boyfriend doesn't take into work to sharpen for me as often.

I like the magnets that don't scratch like these:

My old crappy knives I had in a plastic box high up away from toddlers. My new great Forschner I keep on the tile corner shelf above the sink and under the window. And they don't go in the washing machine either. They've changed my life- or at least speeded up my onion cutting.

I have a knife block now, but I had a magnetic strip before.

In a perfect world I'd have an island like Alton Brown's with the knife slots built into it.

I have magnetic strips at my test kitchen but a block at home. I wrote a similar post recently and found similar results to your survey:

I toss mine in a drawer, too. I have a knife block, but I have accumulated more knives than it has slots for. So the only thing in the block is the sharpener :)

Crappy knives are tossed in the drawer. Nice expensive knives are covered with a knife guard and gently placed in a drawer. It's more space efficient (in our tiny kitchen) than a knife block or full sized drawer-knife-tray-thing.

My good knives live in one of two ways:

1) Their own stand (the Shun Ken Onion one)
2) In a plastic blade guard in the knife drawer

My crappy knives just get tossed in the drawer.

I have an in-drawer knife tray from J.K. Adams that I love. It's very low profile so it will fit my shallow utensil drawer. it will hold 6 large knives and 6 steak knives and a steel. It's a great wedding/housewarming gift too.

I also have one of their "wave" style in-drawer trays but it's thicker and won't fit my favorite drawer. I have it in a "storage" drawer with rarely used cheese knives etc. in it.

I had my own knives; my old roommate had her own knives. And there was a drawer of kitchen implements that HER old roommate had left behind that we hadn't gone through. Then my old roommate moved out, and left behind nearly everything (she was moving to Australia), and I finally had a chance to sort through everything she had left behind.

There were enough knives to fill two butchers' blocks AND a cutlery drawer.

So, I store my knives in both a butcher's block AND a cutlery drawer.

....I'm not doing the kitchen cure quite yet.

In a drawer. Just have a few, would like one of those in-drawer trays if possible. It's on the list of things to do for the cure.

In a a drawer. If the knives came with guards, they're in the guards, but otherwise, they're sitting in my "sharps" drawer with my veggie peeler, my 5 pairs of kitchen scissors, and my hand-held grater.

I have the angled Eva Solo knife stand. Its brilliant design will happily accommodate lots of knives of all shapes and sizes. Highly recommended! :) http://www.evasolo.com/products-knifestand.html

We have a beautiful marble-topped wheeled kitchen island (which conveniently doubles the amount of countertop workspace in our small kitchen) that has slots for seven knives on one side. Super-convenient and attractive to boot.

If you're looking to increase storage and counter space, islands are the way to go! Ours looks something like this.

I use a "Kapoosh" brand knife block. It fits all sizes and shapes of knives. And is fun to say.

I have a Kapoosh, too. Love it so much I got one for my mom. My uncle thought hers was so cool he bought one. Spreads like a virus.

My boyfriend wanted the Vivaterra knife block (The Kitchn actually posted this once) but it was too expensive, so he found a cheap $13 one from a hardware store and modified it into a much more elegant one. You'd never guess it was the same thing!

Original knife block:
http://www.vivaterra.com/pls/enetrixp/!stmenu_template.main?complex_id_in=482007.826941.3729583.2006390.page

How he did it:
http://www.tinkeringmonkey.com/index.php/converting-the-13-harbor-freight-knife-block-into-a-custom-90-knife-block/

It's actually better that the bristles are plastic instead of wood...it would harbor less bacteria. And I really like the fact there are no slots for the knives, which means it's easy to add on or subtract knives from your collection!

Lately I've been keeping mine in a roll since I've been cooking at my families houses but usually at home I store my knives in a design almost exactly like this but a little less wide.

The knives that won't fit in the counter display are in my drawer with covers of course.

I can't help but comment about this: the knives in the block in the picture are in the wrong way! They should be sharp side up to keep the edge longer.

I keep my knives in the crack between the countertop and the stove. Fantastic for my tiny kitchen, and wonderfully practical!

I am going to install a magnetic knife strip above the sink in my new place. I was looking at the Grundtal from Ikea. Does anybody have it and know if it's any good?
