Union Square = NYC's Grocery District?

2005_9_29_food emporium.jpgOn my way into the office this morning, there was a woman awkwardly dressed in a chef's uniform (complete with toque) handing out cards for the "Grand Re-Opening" of The Food Emporium ("NYC's Food Authority" - wait, I thought that was us?!) at Union Square. Is this good news?

We're about to run out of fingers to count the number of places to buy food around Union Square. Of course, there's the Union Square Farmers' Market, Whole Foods, and we've even heard that Trader Joe's will open soon on 14th Street. When you throw in all the Fresh Direct Trucks Idling in the neighborhood, you have a veritable NYC Grocery District.

You can bet that none of those organic produce and recycled toilet paper selling establishments are offering coupons for .39 cent bottles of Coke, or Free Boar's Head Delicatessen Style Mustard with the purchase of a 1/2lb. of sliced deli meat.

Blessed are we to have such choices.
