Outdoor Home Month: What's Outside Food?

2007_06_08-Burger.jpgJune is Outdoor Home Month so we're thinking about outside food, food that comes in with June and leaves with Labor Day. What is outside food, for you? Is it food cooked outdoors? Flame-seared hamburgers with that inimitable charcoal flavor? Clams and mussels wrapped in foil and steamed under the sand? S'mores cooked over a beach campfire until gooey and hot?

Or is it food that you got shooed outside to eat when you were young - wedges of red, dripping watermelon? (With seeds for spitting, please!) Striped popsicles from the ice cream truck? Or perhaps street vendor food, eaten standing up under a tree on a busy day? What does outside summer food look like for you, and what do you look forward to eating when summer begins?

I grew up in Maryland, so outdoor food for me means a crab boil, Old Bay spiced shrimp, corn on the cob, iced tea and lots of napkins!

Deviled eggs are my standard picnic/potluck contribution. Fried chicken and pimento cheese sandwiches are southern classics. My favorite picnic thing for this summer is Buffalo Bleu Kettle Crinkle Cut Potato Chips, so crunchy, so rich and strangely smooth with a spicy aftertaste build up. I can"t wait to have some with a real garden tomato sandwich. Shrimp kabobs for company.

Definitely s'mores on a campfire, except we use peanut butter cups instead of Hershey's chocolate.

The latest hit meal now that the weather's lovely? Chicken thighs marinated in Soy Vay and other sundry vaguely Asian stuff and BBQed on very low heat for about an hour. Also grilled peppers and zucchini with a little salt and olive oil brushed on, wrapped in foil if I remember. Wait, that's tonight's dinner menu!

Back home, steak, corn on the cob and fruit salad (heavy on the watermelon).

Today - fresh cherries in a bag still warm from the sun at the stand where I bought them in the parking lot outside of Lowe's. I am realizing the Lowe's in the worst part of town is the most useful one, and also has the Indian market across from it and people selling awesome stuff in the parking lot on a regular basis. Go figure.
