Look! Chubba Bubba Tomatoes

2008_08_04-toms.jpgIt’s full-on tomato season in California right now and we’re starting to see all sizes and colors of heirlooms and dry-farmed Early Girls in the markets. But never before have I seen the Chubba Bubba. What an odd and intriguing and beautiful looking tomato! Kind of like a cross between a roma and those sweet and sour gumballs I used to love as a kid.

2008_08_04-chubba.jpgLike the sign says (from the Smith Family Farms at the Marin County Farmer’s Market yesterday) this a full flavored, meaty tomato. Delicious!

While I imagine the Chubba Bubba would make a wonderful soup or sauce, I’m enjoying them tonight as part of my favorite summer meal: a BLT made with Semifreddi's challah, crispy bacon, romaine lettuce, Best mayo and thickly sliced chubba bubba tomatoes. Plus a nice cold beer. Now, if someone could please stop that fog from rolling in...
