Garden Solutions: Cheap and Creative Planters for Tomatoes, Strawberries, and Beans

2008_06_16-Garden.jpgStill thinking about a garden? It's not too late to start! You can still buy a few herb plants or even start late summer greens from seed in a container garden. Sonia of our sister site Unplggd turns out to have even more talents. She just gave us a whole bunch of tips and photos on creating cheap, creative planters for your container garden. Take a look at her tips on using cheap containers from Target and IKEA to make a bright and colorful garden.

From Sonia: I went to Target the other day and found that Cynthia Rowley's summer collection, Whim, has some great potting solutions if you get a little creative...

Below is her steel beverage tub, which is $12.99 (they don't have this color online, but this is the same thing: Steel Beverage Tub).

2008_06_16-Garden02.jpgI drilled holes in the bottom and planted my cherry tomato plants and strawberry plants in here. They're flourishing!

2008_06_16-Garden03.jpgThis is actually from IKEA. This is just a $25 11-gallon steel garbage can that I drilled holes into and planted my beefsteak tomato plants into. Ikea now has smaller cans in fun colors as well...

2008_06_16-Garden04.jpgThis is a breadbasket from Target for $3! Drilled holes (love my drill!) and planted green beans yesterday.

2008_06_16-Garden05.jpgAnd these are from Cynthia Rowley's collection as well. They're plastic woven bread baskets that I've put potted plants into and hung from the fence with s-hooks (close-up below). Looks like online you can only buy the whole woven set but I just got the baskets at the store...

Thanks Sonia!

I love that plaid design by Cynthia Rowley for Target. I wanted that bucket so badly, but could think of no good use for it. I don't know why I didn't think of this. Adorable.

How very funny! My mother had the same idea, and helped me do the same thing on my deck: http://www.flickr.com/photos/maceelaine/2554270377/

Great minds think alike. I like the basket idea as well!
