Escapes: Ice Cream for Dinner

2007_08_10-IceCream.jpgWhen we were young sometimes our family would lift our usual strict rules on food and eating for a special ice cream dinner. The basic food groups were thrown out and we'd exchange broccoli for banana slices, milk for whipped cream, and chicken for M&Ms and peanuts - all atop healthy kid-size servings of ice cream.

We thought this was normal - didn't every family do this on rare and special occasions? Apparently not, since we got some strange looks when we talked about it at school.

We obviously can't recommend this as a regular item in your meal rotation, but on a rare night you can't beat it for a way to cool off after a long, hot week of work and busyness. Get a good movie, pull out the ice cream, and try these - some recipes and tips for our favorite toppings:

Peach Sauce
Hot Fudge Sauce
Caramel Sauce
How to Stabilize Whipped Cream

What do you put on your ice cream, and have you ever had an ice cream dinner?

I did that once (maybe twice), with my kids. It was great. I asked what they wanted for dinner, and after they had suggested tortellini and the other usual suspects, all of which I turned up my nose at, I said, "No, something we don't always have." And one of them said, "Ice cream," and they were shocked when I agreed.

I don't remember ice cream dinners when I was a kid, but at least once a year we had a strawberry shortcake dinner--a tradition I carried on with my kids.

My kids were a little strange, though. Their other favorite spring dinner was asparagus--that's it--just asparagus, both steamed and roasted, with seasoned butter, aioli, and/or mayo to dip it in.

i loved our ice cream dinners! we had a fantastic regional ice cream shop ( Braums, in TX & OK) and sometimes my dad would make old fashioned chocolate malts. mmmm those were some good times for sure.

Ice cream dinner night was the BEST. My family did it quite a bit.

pdxcarrie: I'm from Oklahoma, and I have yet to find anything in NYC that can cure my rampant craving for Braums. It's my first stop when I visit my parents. Soooo good.

Strangely, my family never did this when I was a kid, but now that my parents are empty-nesters, they have ice cream for dinner every once in a while. I haven't yet tried it myself.

The Elementary school I attended would have Ice Cream Dinner/Supper fundraising events. It's always fun to have ice cream for dinner!

I have let my own children have ice cream for breakfast on (very) rare occasions....it is a pleasure to say YES and see their faces light with joy (just hope the mommy police don't find out).

I can't believe people mentioned Braums. I am from Edmond OK and peppermint ice cream from Braums is my favorite. It has little chewy chunks of red and green peppermint candy in it. MMMMMMMM. Is love of ice cream an OK & TX phenomenon??

yes! we had ice cream dinners at my house, back when bryers came in a box with a hinge-up lid and a little sheet of clear plastic.

we also had popcorn for dinner occasionally.

all this from a mom who wouldn't buy kraft products (mac from a box especially) or let us eat white bread.

Ooh, yeah, we did this about once a year. Great parents. Also a very rare treat was the ice cream waffle sandwich for breakfast. Such a break from the no-sugar-cereal rule.

My mom would occasionally allow an ice cream dinner-- It was always at a particular restaurant with ENORMOUS ice cream sundaes, and your only hope of finishing one was to skip a meal (sharing was an impossibility because we always wanted different sundaes).

And to lindsey kathlene, we had a tradition of popcorn for dinner on Sunday nights-- my mom would cook a huge meal in the afternoon on Sundays, and Sunday night was the only time she ever took off from cooking. So me and my siblings would make huge batches of popcorn for dinner. I have a large family so we would fill a brown paper grocery bag with the popcorn...

We had ice cream dinner sometimes in the summer, so great. It's never quite as exciting now as it was then, though.

I don't remember my mother having ice cream dinners when I was a child, but now that I'm on my own (and a lover of ice cream) I do an ice cream dinner- or even breakfast- once in a while.

hee. I had ice cream for dinner Sunday night. It was late, we didn't have much else, and I didn't want to cook anything.

We never had ice cream for dinner, strictly speaking. But occasionally, my mom and I would go to a restaurant and order one "real food" item to split and then each order huge desserts.
