Saturday is Bastille Day - France's national holiday. It commemorates the storming of the Bastille, although its origins are really in the feast that was held on the first anniversary of that symbolic event. The Fête de la Fédération was a massive four-day feast held for the population of Paris on July 14, 1790.

Since that feast, food has always been linked with the celebration. After the Fête de la Fédération one of France's daily newspapers remarked that, "people feasted a lot to honour the Bastille."
