Celebrations: Bastille Day

2007_07_13-BastilleDay.jpgSaturday is Bastille Day - France's national holiday. It commemorates the storming of the Bastille, although its origins are really in the feast that was held on the first anniversary of that symbolic event. The Fête de la Fédération was a massive four-day feast held for the population of Paris on July 14, 1790.

Since that feast, food has always been linked with the celebration. After the Fête de la Fédération one of France's daily newspapers remarked that, "people feasted a lot to honour the Bastille."

So eat a French cheese, drink a French wine, and make a French recipe this weekend to honor the holiday. Recipes and French food blogs below...

Try Compotée d'Osso Buco or these crepes. This Alsatian Cottage Cheese and Onion Tart would be great for breakfast.

My wife and I celebrated Bastille Day this weekend by watching the Tour de France riders race into the Alps and cooking up some omelettes. Good times.
