Traditional Scandinavian Kitchen Storage Cabinet

2009_02_19-Cabinet.jpgWe are so smitten by this baby blue Scandinavian storage cabinet. We spotted it over at Living Etc., and after some sleuthing discovered its source.

2009_02_19-Cabinet02.jpgThis handcrafted storage cabinet holds 12 aluminum pouring scoops and 9 glass spice bottles with cast metal lids which are vacuum sealed to maintain freshness. We would love to store flour, pasta, sugar, and other grains in the scoops -- in fact, we were just dreaming about something like this for our little kitchen. The glass bottles are designed for spices, and fit neatly into the round slots in the bottom of the unit. We like how it keeps the spices handy but still away from the light.

We've only found the storage unit sold through a UK shop called Store - A Place for Everything. And here's the kicker: it's super pricey. The larger 12-drawer unit is £460 and the smaller six-drawer version is still £355. Where's an IKEA knockoff when you really need it? We hope we see one soon!

UPDATED: Just found the original source, which is a British company called Ella's Kitchen Company:

Wow I love it! How much is L355? Why don't we have stuff this cute and practical?

There is an Ikea version of this product, but it's been simplified and doesn't have the spice bottle storage. It's the Forhoja wall shelf with drawers.

Love the spice rack portion although that is way too few spices and way too many pouring scoops for me, I'd rather the number were inverted.

Or the birch/glass version! (click through the options on the link above)

£355 = $508, £460 = $659. sigh

...and as much as I love Ikea, a wooden shelf with some little open drawers is nothing like this.

Looks like they only ship within UK. Too bad for US folks. Doesn't look like it would be too hard to build. Just have to find the right bottles and scoops...

fjorlief, I think Michelle of Montreal meant the "birch/glass" one (there's no direct link, you have to select it)

I have it, and like it... but I tried putting cheerios in there and it went a bit stale. It's good for oatmeal (which I only use when making oatmeal) and beans, however. It would make a good shelf, although mine just sits on the counter for lack of wall space in my condo....

i see one of those in almost every antique shop around here. of course when it's second-hand it's not so expensive. although they are usually in bright scandinavian orange or red, rather than light blue. (:

i can't wait to buy one when me and my fiance get our own place!

Oh man, minakim - and I would so rather have this in red or orange, too. If I'm ever in Denmark I'll have to go scouting..

I agree that the ikea version doesn't have as much character, but I have one of the birch/glass ones and LOVE it.

They have one of these in an exhibit on the modern kitchen at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and I've been an admirer ever since!

seems like the ikea one would be good for tea bags and similar quasi-packaged goods, but i've had too many nightmarish experiences with grain moths to keep my flour in there.

this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40034296 is actually the appropriate ikea comparison....not as much character, but several hung in heat rows, possibly painted....still pretty darn cute

This is so cute!

It would actually be perfect for storing all of the tacks, screws, and nails that we buy and then can never find when we need to hang something.

Impossible not to like but pricey for very small amount of storage.
