The IKEA Kitchen: DROPPAR Spice Jars

2008_09_09-Droppar3.jpgIt's Home Cooking month and we're getting our kitchen set up and back in shape. We're focusing on good tips and tools, and we have been showing you a few favorite kitchen things from IKEA - each at the intersection of well-made and low-cost.

This pick is a new favorite. They are admittedly untested by the rigors of daily baking, but so far we love them.

2008_09_09-Droppar.jpgWe mentioned the DROPPAR and CELEBER jars in our roundup of favorite storage jars last spring. Some of you like these; some of you, however, were disappointed with the clear acrylic or plastic in the lids of the larger jars.

The spice jars do not have any plastic in the bottle; they don't have the clear see-through circles in their lids. They are made only of stainless steel and glass. The jars are clear with a frosted strip around the middle where you can place a label or write the name of the spice inside. They feel very weighty and substantial in the hand, and they're not too big and not too small (for our kitchen, at least).

This weightiness and good construction seem a good deal at only $2.99 for a pair!

2008_09_09-Droppar2.jpgWe bought a dozen of the jars (6 2-packs) and so far we're loving them. They're not too small for our whole spices and we like how there's no tapering opening for our measuring spoons to get stuck on.

One caveat: the lids seem to be airtight (there are plastic rings inside to keep a good seal) but they still fit just a bit more loosely than we would prefer. We'll see how this plays out over time.

Have you used these DROPPAR spice jars? What did you think? As always, if you like them, stock up now; IKEA changes its product lines frequently.

Stay tuned for a closer look at our spice storage a little later today.

DROPPAR Spice Jars, $2.99 for a pack of 2 at IKEA. Not available online.

I've bought a bunch of the larger sized ones for flour and other pantry items and like them very much.

I like the frosted glass (which I can write on in pencil) as well as the flat lids, so I can stack the jars in my cupboard.

They look very nice but my objection would be that they are clear. Many spices have light sensitive components and will last longer when kept in the dark.

Hmm, I might need to treat myself to some of these along with in a nice cabinet spice organizer. Got any of those to recommend?? :)

I use mine to hold fish food. Makes a much nicer looking container to have out in my house.

in our experience, the lids aren't entirely airtight and not even completely powdertight. moreover they don't fit terribly well in the in-drawer spicerack that ikea offers (which is what they're kinda s'posed to pair with)... imho, the previous version with the "smurf-hat" tops were a better design and fit side-by-side in the drawer holder better (although the excessive space taken up by the lid was a downer...). the frosted faces make good spots to write, though... essentially, if you've "gone ikea" in your kitchen, this is all they have presently.
