Moving and Storage: Padded Dish Holders

2008_04_30-Dishes1.jpgPacking is a pain, especially when it comes to stacks of dishes. We're in the process of moving, and we just pulled out our padded china cozies. They hold our expensive dishes all the time but are especially comforting when we schlep china across town.

Yes, we know, we have a lot of china. See what it looks like below...

These containers come in all shapes and sizes, and they have slips of foam that slide between each dish. Simple design, but very effective. They make it easy to safely pull down a whole stack of dishes and keep plates dust and dirt free.

They would certainly be useful for everyday plates, not just special occasion ones. And this 6-piece Natural Cotton China Storage Set is on sale right now for $21.99 at The Container Store:

I bought these. We'll see how it goes when I haul all my stuff out of storage in August!

Sigh. I had an awesome set of these that housed my gorgeous 70's floral dishes, and when I gave them away (because my husband thought they were hideous, as I thought his were), the padded storage containers went with them. For the entire 12 set (including creamer and sugar, serving bowls, casseroles...)! I miss the dishes, but I miss the padded storage containers more.

I'm quite sure we couldn't find storage containers big enough to fit our new dishes - they're from Pottery Barn and the "dinner plates" are too big to fit in standard kitchen cabinets (no joke! we walked into the store after receiving them and the sales lady walked up to us and knew exactly what our problem was without our having to tell her). I doubt we'll be able to find nice storage containers for our upcoming move.

However, if anyone knows of containers that will fit our dishes, please let me know, because we bought some extras that are already sitting in storage and will stay there until we break a dish, and I'd like to keep them safe and protected.

Hah at first glance I thought these were dilapidated wedding cakes.

Sometimes I think the folks at Kitchn are mind-readers. Just yesterday, at Target, I was looking for these, to store my dishes during my kitchen renovation. Off to Container Store I go! Thanks, y'all!
