Look! Old-Fashioned Egg Holder

2009_11_17-EggHolder.jpgThe other night we were watching Gosford Park, Robert Altman's wicked and delightful take on British murder mysteries. One of the things we love about this movie is all the rich downstairs detail in the servants' kitchen. You see the knives (well, one especially), stoneware, fancy silver, and other trappings of 1930s English manor cooking. One thing we noticed this time through was the egg holder in the kitchen.

It was a set of stacked trays on dowels, with holes just the right size to cradle eggs. There was a four or five tier holder like this in a passing shot in the movie and we were charmed by it. Eggs definitely weren't refrigerated then (they generally still aren't in Europe) and eggs in a manor kitchen like the one in Gosford Park were probably just gathered fresh that morning anyway.

Well, imagine our surprise then to see an almost identical egg holder over at Wisteria! This could add serious charm to a farmhouse-style kitchen, and we think it would make a fabulous utensil holder. Imagine slotting whisks and spatulas in their own holes, instead of all jumbled in a big jar.

My first thought was that it was a repurposed snooker ball rack....who knew?

I was just re-watching Gosford Park the other day on TV too! I was enamored with shelves of preserves, so nicely labeled and stored.

Love that movie. Jeremy Northam is my favorite actor, and he's incredible as Ivor Novello.
And I really enjoyed the kitchen details, too! The knives, the politics among the staff, etc.

There's a nice picture on Martha's site of an egg holder used as an ice cream cone server:
