Wine Picks for Spring

2008_04_29-SpringWinePicks.jpgAs the weather warms up, we find ourselves reaching for the crisp whites and sometimes the rosés. It's a little early for rosé wines, but we've had some days in San Francisco this month where it was 80 degrees out, so we've made exceptions. Here, we'll share a few of our favorite spring wines in our wine rack.

Adega Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde - vinho verde is a young green wine from Portugal that is fresh and light. Goes well with crisp fruit, gazpacho, and cold seafood.

2006 Roussette de Savoie Marestel - made from Altesse grapes grown in France's Savoie departement, this wine is peppery and buttery, and pairs well with salads, chicken, and fish.

Grgich Hills 2006 Fume Blanc - Fresh and fruity, a great accompaniment for spring vegetables such as asparagus and fiddlehead ferns.

Gazela Vinho Verde - another great Vinho Verde. Vinho Verde is low in alcohol, meaning it won't dehydrate you on hot days. Drink up!

2005 Terlan Alto Adige Pinot Grigio - a smooth, light-bodied white from the Alto Adige region of the Italian Alps. Pair it with some pecorino cheese, green olives, and prosciutto.

2006 Toad Hollow Eye of the Toad Dry Pinot Noir Rosé - a fun warm weather wine with lots of berry flavors. Try it with some fresh herbed goat cheese.

2006 Dry Creek Fumé Blanc - a zesty citrus-tinged white that pairs perfectly with fresh oysters.

2006 Girard Chardonnay - from the Russian River Valley in Northern California, this clean, non-buttery Chardonnay tastes like freshly-picked Spring fruit. Enjoy it after a long day of gardening.

À ta santé! (To your health!)

I love the Toad Hollow! It goes REALLY well with spicy foods - as much as I love beer with Thai food, this goes really well with it, too!

It snowed two days ago in Minnesota. I can drink these and pretend it isn't unseasonably cold. Thanks!!!

I love vinho verde. Also, this txakoli is wonderful...

Ditto on both faith!

Especially when the txakoli is being poured in San Sebastian!

Thanks for the wine tips! Bonny Doon's dry riesling is a favorite of mine. You can find it quite cheap (definitely under $10 and sometimes under $7 during a good sale) in the grocery stores and it has lots of fruity flavors without all of the cloying sweetness.

I just tasted some Trimbach reserves with none other than Hubert Trimbach about 45 minutes ago!

That was exciting!

2002 Trimbach Riesling Cuvee Frederic Emile stood out the most for me.

The Gewurtztraminer is flowery and fruity but still dry enough for plenty of Spring swirling!

I love Gazela. It's so fruity and light, and is fabulous when it's really frosty cold.
