Spring like a Butterfly Kiss
San Francisco Market Report

2009_03_09-springsf.jpgYesterday I went down to the Civic Center Farmer's Market hoping for a glimpse of spring. Several incredibly rainy weekends in a row have kept me away, so when Sunday dawned with partly cloudy skies, I ran out the door and down the hill to see what I could find.

2009_03_09-spring2.jpgBetween piles of the last of the winter squash and tangerines, spring was indeed peeking out, gently and barely there, like a butterfly kiss.

I found freshly dug onions, green garlic, that blowsy cauliflower, three precious bundles of asparagus and a few handfuls of pea shoots. Not a lot, but a start.

Here in California, many of the spring harbingers, like lettuce and radishes, are grown locally year round so while they were at the market, they didn't really shout spring to me. Still, there's more pea shoots and then the actual peas to look forward to. Asparagus and rhubarb and fava beans can't be long off. We've sprung ahead, our evenings are brighter, fruit trees are starting to bloom...ah, spring! Grab it while you can.

So what is that fruit tree that's pictured? I have a couple and I'm not sure what they are...

TIA!
