Spring Garden: The Mint is Back!

2008_04_25-Mint.jpgA few years ago we helped weed an entire bed of mint out of a family member's garden. Mint is a sneaky plant; it takes over as soon as your back is turned. Look at this same bed now, full of nice shrubs and plants getting ready to flower, and... mint! It popped back up!

Elizabeth's post below about using mint in summer rolls reminded us of this very persistent mint plant. More photos of the runaway mint, below...

2008_04_25-Mint2.jpgWe're a little bemused by this, but we're getting ready to visit and dig out a few plants to put in a big pot. We do love mint, and as we told reader Jen in the answer to her question about growing mint, it's not that hard to grow it in a pot. In fact, it's preferable.

Here's one more little runaway plant - we're digging out the roots this time! We love this variety - it's very soft, with huge sweet leaves, but it is a pest if it goes unchecked.

(quietly singing)

And the mint came back, the very next day,
The mint came back, we thought it was a goner,
But the mint came back, it just wouldn't stay away...

My mother planted mint as a sort of ground cover in a flower bed full of rose bushes. It's amazing how quickly the mint took off! But I must say that the scent of the mint is nice mixed with the citrus-y scented roses she has in the bed.

I used the mint already in my garden with abandon, confident that I could never get rid of it. I did - and had to plant some more! (In pots.)

Some jerk in a house I used to live in planted mint everywhere. As well as seeding chives instead of grass. The sheer stench of the "lawn" after mowing was enough to turn me away from mint for good.

i've heard that mint is good near roses because the aphids like the mint better. certainly, my potted mint plant has tons of aphids but seems healthy anyway.
