King Arthur Flour - The Baker's Catalogue: Online

2008_01_18-KingArthur.jpgAs bakers we appreciate great quality, attention to detail, and well-informed resources. Baking can be intimidating and confusing - especially when something goes wrong - and we love stores and resources that can educate as well as inspire. This is exactly why we love The Baker's Catalogue Online Shop from King Arthur Flour.

The Baker's Catalogue is a full resource for bakers. They have everything from high-quality King Arthur flour, which Sara Kate used in all of her recipe testing for her recent baking cookbook, to specialized tools for the baker, to fun and inspiring recipes.

We have also found that their customer service staff, easily reachable by phone, is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They are all baking enthusiasts and are eager to offer suggestions and help in troubleshooting recipes.

Sara Kate also used many of their excellent extracts in testing recipes for her book; you can see their selection of flavors and extracts here.

We enjoy browsing their selection of baking pans and sheets for new toys to add to our collection, and their section of holiday and special-occasion baking is inspiring as well.

We highly recommend them. Their prices are average to high, but very commensurate with the quality of goods they sell and the service they provide.

Have you had any experience with The Baker's Catalogue?

Thanks for the link! I have never come across that site in my internet travels and now have it bookmarked!

I really appreciate how well set up their website is. And their catalog is almost as well written as Lands' End's.

I've ordered many times from King Arthur and have yet to be disappointed. Love their Baker's Banter blog too.

I've actually taken the breads 101 class at the King Arthur building. It was awesome and my wife and I got to spend a long weekend in Woodstock, VT (one of our favorite places).

They have some of the worst customer service I've ever encountered. After my last experience I've decided not to mail order anything from them ever again.

I had ordered panettone baking forms for my annual Christmas baked gift basket I give out to close friends and family. I also ordered a few other things to make the shipping worthwhile (their shipping fees can be pretty steep). They shipped everything but the baking forms, citing them out of stock on the order form. They neglected to inform me of this by email before the order shipped. When I checked online, the baking forms were in stock. When I called I was told they were out of stock when the order was shipped and it isn't their policy to put things on back order. I was welcome to replace the order and pay more for shipping then the baking forms themselves.

I can understand not wanting to backorder items since they have to eat the postage. What I can't understand is how they think it's ok not to inform you of something missing in your order before it ships. It seems like if you can run an online website, you could do this fairly easily.

Love their products, hate their customer service!

regards,
trillium

Ordered chocolate from them for last year's winter holiday gifts and also had some shipping issues, but was on the main pleased with the product when it got to me a couple of days after it should have. The customer service people were nice and the problem wasn't horribly inconvenient for me. I can see how someone who was counting on getting the items in a timely fashion would have been upset though.

The truffles turned out nicely in the end, and I may do them again next year.

My in-laws live a few miles down the road from the King Arthur store and we stop in every visit. We're particularly fans of their waffle and scones mixes. Also, the baked goods they sell (pizza, macaroons, brownies, cookies, etc.) are excellent.
