Corner Stores: What's Your Favorite Food Find?

2008_6_22-swissjam.JPGIf you live in a big city, chances are there's a corner store nearby (or maybe you call it a bodega). These stores carry the requisite junk food, soda, newspapers and lottery tickets, but there are usually a few unexpected food items, as well. Sometimes enough to make a whole dish, or even a meal.

2008_6_22-nutella.JPGOur corner store, wonderfully named Happy Food Spot (on Lincoln Ave. in Chicago), has saved us countless times when we forget an ingredient at the grocery store.

We've also been known to wake up on a lazy weekend morning, craving a homemade breakfast and, finding our fridge woefully understocked, head over to grab ingredients for the whole meal (chilaquiles, anyone?).

Happy Food Spot carries a mix of global ingredients and specialty products that we enjoy sampling. Looking for fruit preserves from Switzerland, Ireland or Germany? They've got them. Mole sauce or masa harina for a batch of tamales? Check and check. And it's reassuring to know that a jar of Nutella is never more than a short walk away. You never know when you might need one.

So, tell us, what's your favorite corner store food find?

My old apartment was directly across the street from an amazing corner store. They had really exotic produce for super cheap (a basket of gooseberries for $1, 16 figs for $2, plums, pears, peaches, strawberries, mix and match for $2 a pound). They also had a great butcher with his own secret spice rub that he would throw on everything. He carried lamb, quail, salmon, duck, filet mignons, oxtail, etc, never more than $5 a pound. They had amazing homemade baklava, hummus, tahini, pickles, roasted beet salad, cheeses.... I miss it so much. I moved 6 months ago and now I'm across the street from a 24-hour diner and a Thai food place.
In LA...
If anyone is ever near Hollywood Blvd and Normandie, go slightly north on Normandie and make a right into the first driveway. Incredible stuff!

In Montreal, a corner store is a "dep" (short for dépanneur).

My corner market is in a Mexican neighborhood, run by Vietnamese, with a Thai butcher shop inside. I've been known to grab fresh sirloin, dulce de leche, a durian and some sriracha sauce to go with the plantains and yucca I picked up.

Definitely horchata! Everything else is pretty run of the mill.
