Lunchbox Helper: Ak-Mak Whole Wheat Sesame Crackers

2008_07_15-AkMak.jpgWe went to our favorite cheesemonger a couple weeks ago and bought some cheese and crackers. We were browsing around for a new cracker and asked him for recommendations. He practically pressed these Ak-Mak crackers into our hands; he got rather intense about it!

2008_07_15-AkMak3.jpgApparently these are his favorite crackers, and now we can see why.

The Ak-Mak whole wheat crackers have been made for four generations by the Soojians, an Armenian family. The crackers are free of preservatives and bleach, and the Soojians use an old Armenian recipe that's remained essentially the same since 1893. They use stone-ground whole-wheat flour in these flat-bread crackers.

2008_07_15-AkMak2.jpgBut what really sets them apart is the healthy amount of crunchy, toasty sesame seeds. They're so delicious in these crackers. The crackers themselves are wafer thin and delicate. Highly recommended! A slice of cheese and a tub of tabbouleh are all you need to add in for a nice light lunch.

You can find these at Trader Joe's and in the ethnic sections of some grocery stores. You can also find them in organic and health food groceries. We paid about $4 for ours but they may be cheaper elsewhere.

Delish crackers. Healthy, crunchy, reasonably priced, and a generous serving is 5 crackers.

Ooo, I'm going to have to get some of these. I like crackers and pretzles but I'm trying to move over to whole grain everything.

A more perfect health/calorie conscious cracker has never ever been made. Great with all cheeses and dips - I love mine with hummus.

Love Ak Maks with roasted garlic and goat cheese, cilantro pesto or feta and roasted red peppers. Or dips!

I alternate between Ak Maks, Ryvita, Triscits and Raincoast Crisps.

I'll ditto the "spread them with Laughing Cow Cheese". It's delish and very low-calorie.

25 years later... had them with brie with the other day, and I might give up my water crackers for good!
