Small Cool 2007: Finalist #6 - Phoebe's Crisp Organic

Name: Phoebe
Location: Cambridge, MA
Size & Type: 63 square feet in a condo
Go to: Original Entry

Phoebe's favorite OTHER entry: #5, Jessica's kitchen, because I really admired the way her color palette (aqua, white, and stainless for appliances and countertops) managed to make a very small, potentially cluttered space look sleek, clean, and airy. (And for an honorable mention, #9, Frank's kitchen: his seemed to be a well-loved kitchen, probably lots of fun to cook in with friends crowded round.)

What's the best thing you've ever cooked in this kitchen? The best thing? How about the best three: chermoula (a Moroccan green sauce made with parsley, coriander, garlic, cumin, paprika, olive oil, lemon juice, and cayenne) ...

Best things cooked in your kitchen, continued ...
* a ghee-infused, tomato-y, buttery spinach dish from Rajasthan, taught to me by my fiance's mother, complete with fresh, hot, homemade chapatis.
* pans and pans of gingerbread. (I started making it after reading Laurie Colwin and have never stopped!)

What is your next improvement (if you could do anything)? - We're in the process of making a large, linen-covered, framed homasote board, to be hung over the exposed side of the fridge at the entrance to the kitchen, so that we can have a rotating gallery of recipes, invitations, and photographs.
- We're also considering adding a pegboard to the kitchen, and would be interested in AT readers' thoughts on kitchen pegboards!

I'd also really like to add a warm thank you to the two people that helped us at every step of the kitchen project-- my father, the architect; and our stoic carpenter, Ernesto Perez.

If I were to design a dream apartment kitchen, this would be it. Exactly. This style is -just- what I want. Beautiful.

I second that. It's perfect because it's so welcoming and liveable and warm, thoughtfully designed. Nothing contrived or fussy or over-done. Love it!

I love this beautiful kitchen! Such a peaceful retreat from a busy world, a place to reconstitute and hang out while cooking wonderful food. It's my favorite!

If I had Phoebe's kitchen, I would eat in every night. It's luminous and inviting...I love the minimalist look of the faucet, too!

So beautiful *and* functional - such amazing attention to detail. Which is especially important in a small space. It's also manages to be very modern but really classic, not the kind of kitchen you'll walk into twenty years from now and say "Oh man, this is so 2000's."

I second Jeni_Rae - this is sort of my dream kitchen.

Also - about the pegboard - we have it all over our kitchen (it came with the place) and I LOVE it. When we moved in I was skeptical that we'd actually use it, but it has been such a great thing - with limited/awkward cabinet space and practically no drawers at all it allows all of our pots and pans to be up on the wall as well as things like potholders, tongs, measuring cups, measuring spoons, juicer, colander, grease shield, etc. It totally rocks.

This Kitchen looks refreshing, The light is spectacular, the white cabinets and the glass cabinet doors help tremendously to make this space looks bigger and very welcoming.
I love the details. It has been very well executed.
Good luck and Congratulations on this kitchen.

I looove this! Just from looking at the pictures it is my dream kitchen. I love the attention to detail, the functional use of space, the personal touches that transform it from a space into a place -- cozy carpet, diagonally placed faucet, the new fixtures in an old frame, the japanese calligraphy print (as it appears in the top picture?). Congrats, Phoebe!

i like bright and cheery kitchens, you've captured that and it also has a sophistication to it. the soft white cabinets and the cold steel appliances mesh well in your kitchen.
