The Daring Bakers and Julia Child's French Bread

2007_03_01-Bread01.jpg Those of you who participated in our Book Club and made it all the way through the sixth and seventh chapters with us know that Julia spent quite a long time developing her recipe for French bread. Her editor Judith Jones felt that it was an essential recipe for the second volume of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and Julia and Paul spent weeks kneading, studying, learning from French bakers, and dropping bricks into steaming hot water!

The final recipe was perfect, and now a whole bunch of food bloggers are trying it out. See Julia Child's bread recipe in real living color, below...

It turns out that the Daring Bakers group of food bloggers is making Julia's French bread this month.

We were especially drawn to the photos and writeup by Michelle of culinography. Her perfectly risen boules are above, and here are two photos of the final bread she baked using Julia's recipe:

Lovely, right? Go check out her post for all her experiences making Julia's bread, along with the recipe. Sounds like a great weekend baking project!

So many bloggers took part in this event. The choice of recipe was really beautiful in its simplicity. It was quite inspiring.

I know a number of us DBers were initially daunted by the sheer size of the recipe, but from what I've read so far, we were all pleased with how the recipe turned out! I served my bread with three different dishes at a dinner party (carb-tastic!), and my guests loved it! Once again, Julia's recipe has proven to be fail safe!
