Small kitchens with limited counter and storage space can almost always benefit from a freestanding island. If your kitchen is along one wall, an island can define the room and create a dining area. In any kitchen, it's another chopping station and extra shelving. Elle Decor's website, Point Click Home, has a gallery of good ones. More pictures, below...
Prices range from low to high, and many of these islands are on wheels, so you can roll them where you need them.

My fiancee has one of these, and it is incredibly useful. We have a small kitchen with pretty bad counter space otherwise, but the island gets a TON of use for prep and storage. We'd be lost without it. The good ones will last forever, too, so the investment is worth it.

I got a kitchen cart for my dorm room. I kept my food and supplies underneath and the top served as a TV table. It had a large slide-out wooden cutting board that made a great food prep area that was easily transported to the community kitchen. It was cheap, but it has moved with me several times now and is still as good as new!
