This is one of those things that we read, then think, "We're moving to the suburbs." Just so we can build this fire pit. If you live somewhere that has more than an outdoor windowsill, maybe you can fulfill our dreams for us? Sherry and John, the DIY couple from the blog This Young House, did it for less than the cost of a tank of gas...
This simple fire pit was part of an inexpensive patio makeover at their Richmond, Virginia, home. You can read about it here:
• Our Cheap-O Patio Makeover, at This Young House
The fire pit is nothing more than garden stones. A few paver stones as the base, then some edging stones creating a little circular wall. Sherry and John make the point that you need to find out what the rules are about fire pits in your city—how far away from the house they need to be located, etc.—and buy a good fire extinguisher.
But overall, the materials were about $28. That doesn't include marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate bars, FYI.
Does anyone else have a fire pit? Are you cooking anything over it?

We built a fire pit in our back yard about 7 years ago. We made it with reclaimed street pavers from an old cobblestone city street, donated. We regularly host oyster roasts over in during the cooler months. Love sitting round the fire on cool autumn evenings. Last year was my 40th birthday and despite it being 12 degrees below freezing, the biggest crowd was sitting around the fire pit "talking story."
